I’m sorry to say that I did not try any Poutine while in Montreal. What is poutine? best as I can tell it consists of a plate of fries, cheddar cheese or cheddar curds and gravy.

While I don’t believe that I really missed out on anything, I do like to try a dish that is “local” which I think I’m safe in saying that poutine is a “local” Québécois dish.

Best poutine (according to the Montreal Mirror)
1. La Belle Province (various locations)
2. Lafleur (various locations)
3. McDonalds (various locations)
4. Green Spot (3041 Notre-Dame W., 932-2340), Burger King (various locations), Valentine (various locations) (tie)
5. Tie: Mondo Fritz (3899 St-Laurent, 281-6521); Shed Café (3515 St-Laurent, 842-0220)
Honourable mentions: Rapido, Chez Claudette, New System, Décarie Hot Dog, Patati Patata.

It's too bad you didn't get to try any poutines on your recent trip to Canada. It really is a tasty treat if you like hearty food, although it is horrible for your heart. Poutines are french fries topped with melted cheese curds (sounds gross, but think melted globs of mozzarella-like cheese) and smothered with a thick brown gravy. They are as common as donuts in Quebec province. I've also come across them in northern parts of VT, NH, and in many parts of Maine, particularly Old Orchard Beach.

I think the gravy at Mondo Frites is vegetarian, for veggies who want to sample. (If it's the one I'm thinking of, Mondo Frites is next to/near Schwartz's- which id definitely not vegetarian!).

the "best poutine" is up to each individual--my only requirement is that it come from a somewhat-greasy restaurant. never have nor will try one from mcdonald's. there's one of such restaurants on Ave. du Parc that delivers for free from 11a-4a that makes a mighty fine pout--they're in my cell phone directory http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdining_forum/smile.gif

also want to note that poutine isn't always wiht cheese curds, sometimes just grated cheese (not sure what kind), which I prefer since the curds don't always melt and they're really rubbery otherwise.

mmmmm poutine.

Thinking about this stuff, I recalled seeing someone with a dish of it in front of them. I wondered what the mess was and why would anyone eat something like that with so much good food around!

McDonalds poutine is inedible IMHO - way too salty. If you can find an A&W, that is the place to go for fast food poutine.

Mmmm! Getting hungry
