how bad is the fight for overhead space??

always fly jetblue but due to a better fare, booked vegas trip with delta...I will be checking luggage but my friends will be doing carryons ( rolling 21 inchers that meet the guidelines)..I am hoping that there will be adequate overhead space or is it a mad race/fistfight for overhead space due to checked baggage fees?

If you are in the last 20% boarding it could get dicey. Otherwise--unless they are dragging steamer trunks aboard--it should be fine.

yes, esp on the 757 rows 18-20 where if your not the first you don't get space as the FA's put their bag in the one side over row 19-20 and there is no under foot storage. I was 2nd to board and had row 18 Monday, had to go back to row 21 to put my bags!

Keep an eye on which zone is boarding and be ready when your zone is called. You may have to go to the back of the plane to find space. Also look for bags placed sideways instead of handle or wheels first.

Assume that your friends have no DL status so worst case, their bags are gate checked. Since you need to go to baggage claim to get yours anyway, this should not be a problem. Just make sure they first remove anything sensitive like electronics, medications, etc. You don't want them in the bag in case of an oops.

if you're checking in luggage, why the concern about them not being able to find overhead space. Presumably you're all going to have to wait for your bag anyway.

(Unless your friends are like FlyAO2 and leave your a$$ behind because they don't wait for luggage...)

Oh the humanity!!!

To the OP:
In all honesty, it's not that bad. Unless you are one of the last to board you will find something. Most of what you hear with regards to the fight for overhead space are people who are upset because they couldn't put their bag right over their seat and had to go back a few rows. Absolute worst case scenario, they get gate checked and it's still not an issue since you will be going to baggage claim anyway.

If you have no status with Delta and board in Zone 4, your chances of getting overhead bin space for a 21" rollaboard is 50/50 with much lower odds of finding something near your seat.

If the flight is full. If you fly at off-peak hours or low-demand days, you will not have a problem.
