NRT/HND/KIX closed after Japan quake

NRT, HND and KIX are all reported as being closed after the massive quake in Japan. (Al Jazeera, CNN, BBC World)

Thoughts go out to the folks in Japan, at 8.9 on the scale this sounds like a nasty one.

It does not seem that KIX (Osaka Kansai) is closed but SDJ (Sendai) is completely flooded.

Thoughts for the japanese people and other affected.

On CNN they just said that SDJ was hit by a 24 foot wall of water. The guy said Sendai airport is "gone".

Wow, this is insane. Watching this unfold from Shanghai. Was just in Tokyo on Wednesday and felt the 7.2 that hit near noon that day.

Thoughts and prayers with those affected.

Will be watching this post for NRT info, as I'm flying thru on Friday (or not).

I just spoke with a crew member in NRT. It's been about 6 hours since the quake hit, after shocks are still coming about 30-60 minutes apart. There are crew stranded at the airport in shelters.

He says the destruction is everywhere.

It's ridiculous that no travel waiver has been issued.

I just saw footage from Sendai on CCTV of an airport. Presumably this is SDJ. If so, it is certainly flooded, but it is not gone. The terminal and tower are clearly still standing.

Thoughts and prayers

Over the years I have amassed MANY very good friends in Japan. To them along with the many FT Japan residents I say my thoughts and prayers are with you. Report from my office in the Akasaka section of Tokyo was that the quake itself was the longest duration "severe" shaking anyone had ever felt. This one will leave a scar.
