Deadheading crew use of overhead storage

Sitting in coach (sigh) recently on a 100% full flight from Atlanta. Boarded Zone 1, after a group of Delta pilots boarded into coach seats. I have a picture (cannot figure out how to post it since it is not a URL...) of the baggage of a female pilot in 13E who placed her roller bag, pilot hat and her briefcase/computer bag in the overhead storage. Now, they were already prospectively checking rollerbags from Zone 4 and up, and made the usual multiple announcements about "please place your smaller carry-on items underneath the seat in front of you"...(and no, she did not have a third item placed under the seat). I actually comply with that request for my backpack, especially when it is a full flight. What message does it send when your own employees totally and publicly (there was NO question to anyone who later looked in vain for space what the baggage represented) ignore the policy? This struck me wrong, so I took the picture...

What's your issue that the briefcase was in the overhead or that the pilot used any part of the overhead? Where do you expect him/her to put their bag? Clearly they cannot check it

The computer bag was clearly of a size to fit under the seat. Combined with the roller bag and hat, the total package took up 1/2 of the two-row bin -- six seats. Put the computer bag under the seat in front of her...that's what I expect.

Deadheading crew will always stow the bags in cabin. Usually they put it in the closet, but a lot of DL configs are lacking when it comes to closets (maybe warm weather centric configs?)

At any rate I side step this entire issue by using a 20" roll-aboard with front laptop compartment. Just the right size to fit all mainline (and most barbie) jets bins, but big enough that I don't get the stink eye putting it up.

Between this thread and the 'learn to pack lighter' thread, perhaps we should change the name of the board to OverheadStorageTalk rather than FlyerTalk.

It's the entire "entitled" system of the airlines.

Think about it, when you go to the grocery store do thier employees get to "cut line" at the cash register? But at an airport the airline employees get to cut off thier customers because "we are too important to stand in line" And that kind of explains thier entire view of thier "customers"

Same thing with thier luggage etc.... Customer care has an issue in the entire industry, it's not just Delta! (But if you put something on top of that hat maybe the pilot would learn )

While they (pilots) can not check their bags they can certainly put their hat in their lap. As for the briefcase will they even fit under a seat? If so they should of stowed there like the rest of the PAX should be doing with their second bag. However, in this day and age of the boarding/overhead scrum only a few are being that courteous.

Zero issue with the roller bag or the fact that it was stowed in the overhead. Ditto the hat...where are you going to put such a hat, anyway? The computer bag added on top of the hat meant the total length was fully one half of the entire two-row bin (or, to put it another way, all of the row 13space before 13D or 13E were on the plane). It seems to me the message is the courtesy we expect and ask for repeatedly of our passengers...does not apply to us...

I recently sat by a pilot who simply slid his brim of his hat into the seatback pocket.

Probably the safest course if OrangeCountyCommuter is nearby!

To give her some credit, the hat was vertically wedged between the rollerbag and the computer bag.

As the fees go up for checked baggage, it's a bigger issue.

Don't have to tell me...it's gone from battleground for UGs to battleground for OH space. Before long everyone is going to be in the death spiral race to see which of the legacy airlines follows Spirit and begins charging for carry ons!

Look at the bright side . . . At least this isn't another (suspected) Shena thread!

I find your analogy as a bit odd as, in your example, the grocery store owns the checkout lanes. The airlines don't own the checkpoint lanes, the government does.

And the flight crew has just a bit more to do than sit on the aircraft and wait for everyone to come down.

And I, for one, don't mind that they are in front of me. Never have I ever seen a flight crew have an issue with a carry-on bag that made it be re-run thru the x-ray machine. These folks are a little more experienced than most of us.

And without knowing the aircraft, 13E could be a middle seat. I wouldn't blame her if she put the laptop up as I would do the same thing, regardless of how tall or short the person is.

ha??? Are you serious???
Pilots have a checklist and aircraft walk around to do, and FA's check emergency equipment and prepare cabin for boarding.

We dont get paid untill boarding door is closed, so we make it there just in time to make our FAA mandatory checks and start boarding.

Now excuse me but can I get in front of you sir?? Thank you
