Vueling second carry on bag

I am flying with Vueling next week as part of a multi-city trip that begins this weekend (so need to get this sorted before I leave home).

Has anyone had any experience with the type of items that Vueling allow as the second "significantly smaller" item that their conditions of carriage permit?

I plan to take a dead on 55x40x20 case plus a rucksack which will fit under the seat. The lack of a defined size makes this rather difficult to judge.

Also, do they regularly make you put items into a "cage" at the boarding gate to make sure they fit in (like you get with easyJet and Ryanair)?

8.5
Hand luggage

Each Passenger may only carry one item of hand luggage of up to 10 kg and no larger than 55x40x20 cm, with the exception of the Excellence fare which allows for one item of hand luggage of up to 14 kg.

In addition, the Passenger may carry one extra item free of charge and which must be significantly smaller than 55x40x20 cm, such as a small briefcase, a handbag or camera.

At the boarding gate, all hand luggage which does not comply to the company's regulations, i.e. which exceeds the amount, weight or measurements stated above, shall be removed and stored in the cargo hold of the plane, at an additional charge.

Good questions- would a backpack qualify (guessing no as it says 'small briefcase') if it fits under the seat in front of you.

I have taken this combination several times with no problems.

Great.

I have just checked in and the boarding pass states this:

I read that as meaning any size under 55x40x20, which the backpack will be (probably 50x30x10). If they argue, it is there in black and white.

I have never seen Vueling force anyone to check bags before the actual boarding. (OK, I assume there is some kind of limit...) Their "policy" seems to be to allow whatever you can carry, but once the bins are full they take everything of the remaining passengers (even that what's within the rules) to put it in the hold.

When they put the overflow in the hold there isn't a charge right?

Took my Vueling flight this morning. It was approximately half full (I had the entire row of six seats to myself). The "cage" was placed at the boarding gate, but no-one was pulled up on their luggage, even the clearly oversized bags. Many people had two or three items.
