It is currently not technologically possible to split the double stay promotion folks from also getting double nights.
And, for others, the idea that SPG has prevented anyone who took advantage of Stays Count Double in the past to get the Platinum 50% off redemption offer is a myth. That never happened.
Note: I'm not saying it won't ever happen, but it has never happened in the past. That, as it turns out, was an internal miscommunication.
