Is this code supposed to also give you an upgrade? I am Emerald Club and I got $161/week for an Emerald Isle Standard and $188/week for a"Full Size". Is the extra $2.50/day worth it and am I entiteled to a premium upgrade from here?

I have used the 5760339 code frequently. It does not give an upgrade, but it is combinable with any coupon that provides an upgrade, a free day, or dollars off. Combining this rate with Entertainment or Sam's coupons can be terrific. From Entertainment, you can use a free weekend day with this rate (2004 coupon code 10008612; 2005 coupon code 10009120) or to combine the 2 car class upgrade coupon (taking you from compact to standard) (2004 coupon code 10008613; 2005 coupon code 10009121). You do have to surrender your paper coupon at the time of rental, so don't book these if you don't have an Entertainment book.

It is my belief that Standard cars don't actually exist. I've never seen a sign in any National lot for standards. I believe that cars go from intermediate to full. If a standard is less than a full, I'd take a standard.

I don't have an upgrade to premium. All I have on premium is $20 off a weekly. Entertainment Coupon that must be surrendered at time of rental. Coupon code 10008615 (2004) or 10009123 (2005). Can be combined with Carlson rate. Coupons good on midsize through specialty (whatever that is).

I have not done any rentals with National in almost a year. I was glad to see the Carlson discount codes that I first posted back in March of '03 were still working. I went to the Carlson Travel website http://www.carlsontravel.com/Carlson...tic/node44.asp and entered my travel info. My car rental was at the Fort Myers (RSW) location. Using a NWA 1 day free coupon I was able to secure a full size vehicle for 4 days at the rate of:
Car Class:
Full Size 2/4 Door Car Auto A/C
Rates:
TIME & DISTANCE 1 VARIABLE @ 107.96 107.96
UNLIMITED DISTANCE-TIME & DISTANCE 0 DISTANCE @ 0.00 0.00
Sub total 107.96
Promotional Discount:
NW VISA MAILING 12/02-FD -26.99
Surcharges:
CUSTOMER FACILITY CHRG 1 USD/DY 4.00
CONCESSION RECOUPMENT FEE 11.11 PCT 11.99
FL SCHRG/TIRE BAT FEE 2.05 USD/DY 8.20
LICENSE RECOUPMENT FEE .49 USD/DY 1.96
Taxes:
STATE TAX (6.0%) 6.43
FFTXRSU (0.0%) 0.23
Total Estimate 113.78
(Country of Residence: US) (USD)
Approximate Estimated Conversion: 113.78

4 days at $28.45 per day. That's a lot cheaper than anything else I can find. By the way the old travel ageny issuing the rental reservations using the B39401 rate code was based in Boston. The new agency is based out of Maryland.( Traveltours Of Maryland
16038 Three Notch Rd, California, MD 20619 US (800) 734-4281.IATA#21840383.

You don't have to book through the Carlson Web site to use the Carlson code. 5760339 works through nationalcar.com and I've never been challenged by any of the exit booth agents when renting with it.

The underage fee with Carlson is only $10 per day, which helps a lot for this 23-year-old!

I've started using some of those universities' codes mentioned above since they charge no underage fee, but those only work well for rentals returning at the same location. One-ways are charged per mile, which negates any cost savings in most cases.

It is good to have the info about how and where you made the reservation in case you are ever challenged. I have made reservations with Carlson's website as well as National's using the codes and have never experienced any problems either, but there might come a day when someone is going to ask about the code, and the more info you have the better your chances of leaving the premises at the rate quoted. Now if only Vacation Outlet would update their free day coupons to 2005.

Have used the carlson code 4 times in a row at Newark airport, no problem. Tried to use it on the day before Thanksgiving and got a hard time. The agent wanted to see some travel agent identification card, I had no idea what she was talking about. I rent every week at that location and said I have never had to show any card and that the travel agent also said I didn't have to produce anything. In the end I got the rental at the carlson rate, but was told by the manager I would have to produce the card next time I rented.

costco.com does not have anything for National. They only have Avis, Alamo, Budget, and Hertz.

You can however go to this link to print out a $20 off coupon compliments of the Entertainment book. http://www.nationalcar.com/servlet/D...XDATE=12/31/05

Even though I don't work for any of these universities, I have never been challenged for the use of the contract ID. The advantage of using these contract IDs, is that there is no "young renter fee." That saves you $10-25 a day. The reservation screen will tell you that the Loss Damage Waiver is included, however you will not be covered unless you belong to the university. So you will need to make sure that you're insured. You can either get a third party policy through Travel Guard ($7) a day, or check if you have coverage through your insurance policy.
The contract IDs I have found work best are 5001514 and 5002341.

Hey Siudude, I just went to national and reserved a car using the contract id's you listed. I booked it for orlando international airport and chose counter service. What will I need to show at the counter about the contract. I as well am a "young renter". Im 24 years old. I just wondered if there is anything i have to do or if they will tell me I have to pay the extra fees. thank you for your help

zoarswimmer, you don't have to show anything at the counter when using a contract ID. Just play it cool and you'll be on your way with no underage fee!

Help me out here. What is the Carlson code and who/what am I saying I am or belong to? I ask because I plugged it in, and the rate it gave me was too good to be true compared to what I was being quoted previously. Please advise. Thx.

The Carlson code is 5760339, and it's supposedly for travel agent use only (specifically, employees of Carlson-Wagonlit travel agency). However, most people here on this board have been able to use it at National locations around the country without being asked for travel agent ID. You should be fine.
