IM4Travel: Both the Four Points and the Sheraton Centre-ville are well located in the heart of downtown, but if you'll be using a Free Weekend, stay at the more upscale Sheraton Centre-ville. As A Starwood Platinum, you will most likely be upgraded to Club Level. The Club lounge, on the top floor of the hotel, has panaramic views of the city and St. Lawrence River. Rooms have recently been refurbished and are quite nicely decorated.
Why don't you coordinate your trip to Montral with our FT get-together, the FAQ (July 21-24). We'd be happy to have you join us.

I agree with flyme2 about the two properties, and have just got off the phone with Starwood having changed my Free Friday to the Sheraton Centre from the Four Points. I will still use the Four Points for the remaining two nights of the FAQ for which I am using a 50% off Award Certificate that expires at the end of July. There is no space [under this Award category] to book these nights at the Sheraton Centre. FYI: The Four Points goes for between C$109 and C$149 per night, while the Sheraton Centre is in the C$155 range depending upon the night and special price on offer. (My free night was booked at a C$350 rate, then comp'd!)

Opinions for Montreal hotel stay
My favorite hotel in Montreal is the Intercontinental Hotel, which alas, is not a Starwood property.
Selecting among the Starwood hotels, I am trying to decide between the Sheraton Hotel & Towers or the Four Points Montreal Center Ville (on Rue Sherbrooke).
I'm interested in hearing opinions as to which of the two hotels you prefer and why?
How likely is one hotel over the other to upgrade Platinum members? If they upgrade to suites, are they worthwhile suites (as opposed to marginally better rooms)?
Thanks in advance!

The Four Points is nothing special, a very basic mid-level hotel for business people and tourists. It is quite affordable, at C$125 for most room categories. If you stay there, insist on a room fronting on Sherbrooke, and on a high floor. The "Mountain View" rooms are not as nice, though the view may be preferable. The Sheraton Centre is more up market, but you'll pay 50% or more for the extra benefits. As a Plat, you might get upgraded to the Club level if there is space, but during the summer it is heavily booked. There is no longer a Westin in Montreal, it is now the Omni.

Have never seen the 4Points rooms, but the Sheraton on Sherbrooke is quite a nice property, especially if you get a Club Level Room.
That being said, the room I was in felt very crowded, and nothing exceptional. You should probably see what the price difference is between the two, and decide whether the possibility of a Club Level Room is worth whatever the difference is.
But I will say that the Omni is very nice.

My choice would be the Sheraton Centre-Ville. As a Platinum, you would most likely get upgraded to a suite, and Club Lounge access would most certainly be a given, even if you weren't accomodated on the Club Floor. The Lounge, by the way, is quite spectacular given its top floor vantage point, luxurious appointments and waiters clad in formal long tails. Breakfast, afternoon tea and evening hors d'oeuvres are served daily, but, similar to a cruise ship, soft drinks and alcohol are not complimentary while tea and coffee are.
The Four Points is not a bad chioce, but feels more like an efficiency apartment (its previous incarnation). The hotel is mostly comprised of junior suites, but as a Platinum you would most likely get a small two room version. The property has more of a suburban feel to it than a true full service downtown hotel. There is no Club Level or breakfast offered.
The Sheraton Centre-Ville often participates in Starwood's Last-Minute Weekend Rates where rates are often in the $149 CAD ($95 USD) range. A bargain, really, considering all the benefits you receive as a Platinum.

I like the 4 points quite a bit. The rooms were clean and large(I had a mountain view room) with all the standard biz amenities... The staff was very friendly and I liked the coffee shop just adjacent to the lobby (Presse Cafe...it's a chain) very convenient to the Metro and the main drags...I've always thought the Centre Sheraton was a little dingy. For the money I'd say the 4 points is a better value... Only downside is that there is no pool, but you can use the pool at the Delta across the street. The Delta is very nice as well btw.

On a free weekend, I would select the Sheraton Centre over the Four Points Centre Ville [Downtown], just because it is a higher category property. It is at the higher end of the U.S. Sheraton quality scale, which can indeed be quite variable [as can domestic Hiltons]. It ranks with your average Westin. That said, I have found the Four Points both convenient and quite affordable, and stay there quite regularly when the budget is of concern. I have never experienced the type of incompitence alluded to by moeman. Just don't expect Westin-like standards and finishes. If you are travelling with children, it may be more convenient than the Sheraton, since you will find McGill University campus just down Sherbrooke, and kids would likely enjoy the green space and climb up the mountain. There is also a large grocery store around the other corner, at Park, which can help cater to the younger appetite.

I just stayed in the Sheraton Le Centre and it was fine. Be careful when they check you in, though. My girlfriend's flight got in very late and we did not get to the hotel until about 1:45 am. We checked in and went up to the room, only to notice that the bathroom light was on and towels were all over the floor. At first, it simply appeared that they did not clean up, but when we turned on the lights, we saw a nice set of golf clubs and suitcases. Either they're giving really nice welcome gifts to gold elites, or we got someone else's room (Fortunately, the occupant was spending a late night out on the town.). The front desk apologized and joked about how we would have to share a room since we were using a free weekend. Otherwise, the hotel was fine. Nothing fancy, but certainly up to Starwood's high standards. Great location as well.

Having stayed at both hotels quite frequently, there is really no comparison between the two hotels. The Sheraton is a proper hotel; whereas, the Four Points provides a functional room. Service is better at the Sheraton, though the Four Points' staff has always been competent....
The Sheraton is also closer to the old port and the Molson Centre, closer to the interesting parts of Ste. Catherine Street (marginally).
Food is poor at either hotel...though the Sheraton is closer to Queue de Cheval(excellent steaks).
Cheers,
Mykol

I live in Montral and have stayed at both properties a number of times. There is no contest. The Sheraton Centre-Ville is vastly superior.
I am curious, itsallaboutthemiles, what have you heard about the Sheraton that would make you want to stay at the Four points? Please expound.

Where do I stay in Montreal, BC
I'm thinking about taking a short trip up to Montreal. I'm SPG gold, where do I stay up there? Anyone have any suggestions (of course within the SPG group)
Any good restauruants, or things to do for a quick get away? Your help is much appreciated!

Depends on what you are looking for. I was in Montreal several weeks ago for my bachelor party, so I'm not sure the restaurants and "entertainment" we chose would be of any interest to you, but...
There was a thread with a long description of the diffence between the Sheraton and the 4 Points.
We stayed in the 4 points b/c it was cheap. It was still convienent to everything and clean, comfortable, and I got a great 2 floor suite for something like $60 US a night.

You say a 2 floor suite, you mean on the 2nd floor, right?
I go to school in Vermont, and I just want to get away for a nice weekend!
Where exactly was that 4 points? (i'm not too familiar with Quebec)
