777 for STL-LAX Today - Charter? (double rescue flight for diversion)

UA is repositioning N774UA from IAH today to serve STL-LAX - is it a charter? Strangely United.com is selling tickets to the general public....

Strange -- STL-LAX is not a route UA usually does. Flight is UA3011, which is not consistent with current charters flight numbering (which are now 37xx) so I'm not sure what is happening there.

Appears to just be a normal scheduled flight - just on a route UA doesn't normally fly. A number of people cleared the upgrade list into F, and a number of others cleared standby onto the flight.

Presumably there's something happening in the LA area that STL people wanted to be at over the next few days (or the reverse over the past few days) that was enough for UA to run a extra flight for the additional demand.

Very peculiar flight. Not exactly departing from a gate it appears. Inbound from IAH had very very few pax, but this flight actually appears to be well-booked. Doesnt list meals or amenities either. Strange

Was there a XXX-LAX flight that diverted to STL and subsequently canceled? 30xx flight numbers tend to be used for recovery flights.

An EWR-LAX flight was diverted to STL because of smoke in the cabin and the STL-LAX flight is for all of those stranded passengers. Ironically enough, right after takeoff from STL there was smoke from one of the engines so the replacement flight had to also have an emergency landing back in STL

And now the flight took off, returned to STL, and has been cancelled.

rjv186 thanks for the insight! even more strangely, N774UA (failed replacement flight, attempt #2 aircraft) is spending only 8.5 hrs for maintainance at EWR tmr, before heading all the way down to Rio on UA3928. Is this yet another recovery flight? UA doesn't even usually fly the 772 to Rio, only the 763 from IAH.....

That is a ferry flight with no pax, no idea if maintenance is done at GIG now or not.

UA is trying again today with UA3015. Much fewer pax on this flight.

will be interesting to hear what UA offers for compensation.

Yes. They recently bought an ex-VARIG hangar and are now doing some sort of widebody maintenance down there.

Still a lot of people in terminal for Lambert 🤣

I just boarded a UAX to ORD flight one gate over from that flight.

Neat to see a triple at Lambert. Made small talk with two wheelchair staff explaining the situation to them and even they took a picture of it ☺️

What are the Rams up to these days? I hear the LA Rams have a lot of fans in St. Louis.
