shortest flight offered by major carriers
I recently flew on Northwest Flight 3816 from Tinian to Saipan - the flight was operated by Pacific Island Aviation, but I had a Northwest ticket and Northwest flight number.
The flight was 11 miles! According to the pilot you can see the tower at Saipan prior to takeoff from Tinian on some clear nights!
Anyone been on a shorter flight ticketed on a major carrier?

According to ITN, South African Air offers a flight between JFK and LGA - distance is 11 miles! DCA-BWI is served by US and is listed as 30 miles.

Every time this topic comes up on another travel forum in which I participate, it seems that MIA-FLL is the shortest U.S. domestic route. It's under 30 miles.
As to the shortest route served by a full jet, I believe it's COS-DEN, in which some service is on a 757. Or is DCA-BWI served by a full jet?
As to the JFK-LGA service, I'm not so sure that's served by air. Can you confirm this? Some carriers offer ground service and assign a flight number and offer 500 FF miles. ABE-EWR is one such route served by CO.

I've taken the IAH-HOU flight on CO.
It may be only 20 minutes, but on my flight, it was the longest (and I feared last) 20 minutes of my life!

I have flown BWI/DCA and it is a nasty little commuter. That's the one where there was NO inside storage and we had to put our laptops behind our backs for takeoff.
My SEA/PDX this week was actually under 30 minutes due to strong tail winds.

OK, the South African Air run between JFK and LGA is a bus so it doesn't count.
The shortest run (with a plane) for any of the routes mentioned so far is MIA-FLL at 21 miles. It is served by a commuter plane, not a jet.
ITH-ELM is 32 miles and US actually runs a DC-9 jet on one of the flights.
WRG (Wrangell) to PSG (Petersburg) along the Inside Passage is served by an Alaska Air 737. It is only 31 miles.

Well, having flown IAD-BWI and BWI-IAD about 8 times this year, I can tell you that during rush hour flying is a much faster way to cover the 55 miles. But the J31s take longer than driving when there is no traffic (if you include taxi and gate time).

I read in the BA magazine that one of their flights between two islands of the Shetland Isles north of Scotland, is the shortest sheduled flight in the world, flight time varies from 3 minutes if fully loaded to 1.5 minutes if lightly loaded with the wind in the right direction.

Stuart, I read that too, but I think it's in the Orkney Islands. I seem to recall that one of the airports is Kirkwall and the other is, quite simply, a field. The aircraft is a BN Islander, in full BA livery. I think it said something like the pilot is also the village postman.

More interesting would be which of these commuter flights can be booked as a reasonable round trip price, and then fly back and forth to achieve elite status. I found a 60 mile flight that costs R/T with taxes $40. 1000 miles = $20 or so worth of miles so I'm sure you guys can do better
