Higgins Restaurant - 2003 Restaurant of the Year – Portland, Oregon

Higgins opened the restaurant carrying his name with not just a mission, but a mission statement on his menu. "The cuisine here at 'Higgins' is truly rooted in our Northwest soil," it declares. "We hope our commitment to these principles of ingredients, which are local, seasonal, organic and sustainable, will nourish your mind and body."
Higgins applies an imagination as wide as a Northwest horizon to intense local ingredients. He stacks Northwest seafood into a Mediterranean-minded saffron bourride, shuffles fiddlehead ferns with orecchiette pasta, tops gleaming Yaquina Bay oysters with dabs of carrot-habanero ice.
He has helped organize the Northwest's first conference of regional chefs and fishermen, to go with an established annual meeting of Portland-area chefs and farmers. He's the Portland head, and on the national board, of the Chefs Collaborative, dedicated to promoting local, sustainable food. Last spring, he was named the James Beard Chef of the Year for the Northwest.

We had the first Portland FlyerTalk event at this restaurant (about 3 years ago, I think) as suggested by essxjay. Since then, I eat here at least once everytime I'm in town. It's great!

A longtime haunt of mine, literally since Day One. (It's right across the street from the paper I used to work for, so I got hooked fast.) It's still my favorite place in town, hands down.

The house-cured pastrami open-face sandwich with aged white cheddar is to die for. No need to eat in the dining room. There's plenty of room to dine in the bar, with many of same items that are available in the dining room. The bar staff are just as professional as the dining room waitstaff, plus you're closer to the beer. There's always some on nitro and cask.

Run, don't walk!! <g>
