If you can't find what you're looking for from the referenced threads, are you looking for the best fish and chips in a grotty cafe / take away (but good food) kinda way, or are you looking for a restaurant?

If the former, I'd go for the Rock and Sole Plaice (which is mentioned in the threads above). If the latter, Sheekeys. Ignore all references to Harry Ramsdens, once an excellent fish restaurant in Leeds, now the McDonalds of fish and chips.

I highly recommend the North Sea Fish Restaurant. It is near the British Museum. Do a web search on it, there are a lot of very good reviews of both the quality and the inexpensive price. Decent sit down place with a good assortment of whisky as well.

I went to the venerable Seashell in Lisson Grove in Marylebone back in July. I must say I was not impressed given its reputation. I thought that it was good but there was no *WOW* factor, except, perhaps, the volume of chips we received.

I am wondering if it is the frying process or the quality of the fish. . . . I feel that I can definitely get better fish and chips at home in Vancouver at half the price.

The Sea Shell has changed hands a number of times since it first developed its reputation, and has IMO gone seriously downhill. FWIW, I won't now take visitors there any more.

It's almost impossible to get a decent fish supper in London. The closest I've found to something decent is the chippy in Whitecross Market (EC1), who at least have the good grace to offer you haddock instead of the flavourless and overpriced cod you tend to get down South.

But London chippies seem to have this thing for dense, greasy batter, which I really don't like. The batter should be light and barely detectable.

Shame. Ach well, looks like I'll have to wait for another trip up to Whitby...
