We've Already Had Some...

...the most noteworthy was Dennis Tito, who spent about a week on the International Space Station (ISS) a couple of years ago. He paid the Russians 10's of millions of dollars for the training, a ride in a Soyuz spacecraft and the ISS visit. It really ticked off NASA, BTW. The Russian had originally contracted with Tito for a visit to the Mir. By the time they had him trained and scheduled, the Mir had been deorbited. The Russians "informed" NASA that they would be bringing Tito to the ISS in order to fulfill their contract. NASA put up a fight that caused several month's delay in the visit, but they eventually agreed with a whole bunch of constraints -- like "don't touch anything!" NASA was really two-faced about the whole subject. In the pre-Challenger days, I recall they were lining up all sorts of people (including politicians like Jake Garn & Bill Nelson, school teachers, Walter Cronkite, etc) for Shuttle rides who were, at best, marginal contributers to the space program. (I have to exclude John Glenn, who had a key medical experimentation role on his Shuttle flight. On the other hand, Jake Garn's job was to be the case study for space sickness -- the designated puker -- a role I'm told he performed very well and very often.)

In addition to the money aspect, you can't be over about 5'6" in height and fit into a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. I'm 6'0" tall and I've tried to fit into one at RSC Energia -- no go!

Thanks, Canarsie.

FWIW, more on this:

At One Point, 'I Was Deathly Afraid,' New Space Visitor Admits

...A day after he piloted a rocket ship to the cusp of space, he said yesterday that the problems he experienced during the harrowing ascent - including a violent roll to the left and a vital control system gone awry - had led him to expect the worst.

Mr. Melvill, the first person to reach space in a project developed with private financing, recalled in an interview from Mojave, Calif., that he had considered aborting the flight miles above Earth or even trying a high-risk bailout that would surely have doomed the tiny craft, SpaceShipOne.

"I had a sort of resigned feeling in my mind that there was no way to get back with a situation like that," he said in an accent that still bears traces of his native South Africa, 37 years after he moved to the United States...

British entrepreneur Richard Branson said Monday that his Virgin company plans to launch commercial space flights over the next few years.

The Virgin transport, entertainment and communications group has signed an agreement with pioneering aviation designer Burt Rutan to build an aircraft based on Rutan's SpaceShipOne vessel, Branson said...

Now Earning Wings, a New Kind of Astronaut

...The F.A.A. wings were the brainchild of Michelle S. Murray, an aerospace engineer in the aviation agency's Office of Commercial Space Transportation, which regulates businesses that are out of this world, or aim to be.

The two pins that have been awarded so far were made to order, according to the F.A.A., and new ones will be ordered when, or if, they are needed.

The X Prize was conceived to encourage a new role for the private sector in human space travel, beginning with space tourism. Burt Rutan, the designer of SpaceShipOne, has signed a deal to develop a larger craft for Sir Richard Branson, who has announced flights beginning as soon as 2007 for passengers willing to pay $190,000 for what would have to be considered the ultimate thrill ride: a roller coaster some 60 miles high.

Which raises the question: Will the passengers also qualify for astronaut wings? ...

Chinese businessman books quick getaway in space

Chinese businessman books quick getaway in space

A Chinese man has paid $100,000 (56,306 pounds) for a 90-minute voyage that will make him China's first tourist in space, the China Daily said on Friday.

Jiang Fang, president of a Hong Kong company that acts as the China agent for U.S.-based space tourism firm Space Adventures, would experience zero gravity on one of the company's sub-orbital flights due for launch in 2007, the China Daily said.

That same year, China plans to launch its third manned space flight, which should include the country's first spacewalk.

American millionaire Gregory Olsen returned earlier this month from a one-week stint on the International Space Station arranged by Space Adventures at a price of $20 million.

Space fever is running high in China after safe return of its second manned space mission, the Shenzhou VI, on Monday and could spike again when a television show offering an insider's view of the national space programme hits screens this month...
