I wonder if this means that they are not getting the Shanghai flight or if they chose to use PEK as their main base of operations since it is the capital. I was hoping more for the Shanghai flight, but this is good news none the less.

IIRC they applied for both destinations (one this year and one next year) & I believe were most keen on PEK due to the upcoming summer olympics in '08.

The proposal for new routes to China:
If approved, service between New York/Newark and Beijing will begin in March 2005, with Shanghai service beginning in March 2006. Each flight will be linked to dozens of communities via Continental's Global Gateway hub at Newark Liberty International Airport, the only major-airline international hub serving the New York area. In all, Continental anticipates its proposed Beijing and Shanghai services will provide for more public benefits than proposals for new service at Chicago, Atlanta, Honolulu, Oakland and San Francisco.

Who is proposing service to/from OAK? The rest make sense (ORD=AA or more UA freqencies, ATL=DL, HNL=NW/UA, SFO=UA more frequencies). Or will Air China and the like look to OAK as an alternative to SFO?

Edit: found this: http://www.flychina.com/news.htm
U.S.-China routes are highly prized because of the restrictive aviation pact between the two nations. Among U.S. carriers, only United and Northwest can offer passenger service with their own aircraft. In June, however, the countries signed a deal that will more than double the number of U.S. airlines allowed to serve China and permit nearly a five-fold increase in weekly flights over the next six years. For passenger service, the DOT can choose one new U.S. carrier to serve the market as soon as March 25. For March 25, 2006, it can choose another new passenger or cargo carrier.
North American is primarily a charter carrier. For China, North American proposed to launch daily Oakland-Shanghai service via Honolulu in March, with an average one-way coach fare of $315, a one-way walkup coach fare of $355 and an average business-class fare of $1,198. It would use 767s and later add 777s. In March 2006 it would add nonstops from Oakland to Shanghai and Guangzhou.
North American faces fierce competition:
* American wants to launch daily Chicago-Shanghai service on 777 aircraft May 1.
* United, which started Chicago-Shanghai service Oct. 31, wants to offer the first daily, nonstop service to Guangzhou by launching service from San Francisco March 25 using 747 and 777 aircraft.
* Continental said it would address a "glaring defect" in U.S.-China services -- the absence of U.S. carrier nonstops from the New York area -- with daily Newark-Beijing service in 2005 and daily Shanghai service in 2006 on 777 aircraft.
* Delta wants to start daily Atlanta-Beijing service in March 2006 on 777 aircraft.
* Hawaiian wants to begin San Diego-Honolulu-Shanghai service on 767 aircraft in 2006.
