Mauritius Hotel/Resort?

I'll be going on my honeymoon to Mauritius and was wondering if any FTers had been there before and might have a recommendation on the hotels and resorts. What's the best bang for my buck? I want to stay at a nice place, and really give my fiancee a great honeymoon, but I don't want to drop $5k on 10 nights in a hotel if I can help it..

Thanks in advance!

peace,
~Ben~

There was an article in the NYT travel section abou the best beaches in the world the other day. It indicated that the older properties in Mauritius have the best beaches - the newer ones not very good beaches but better rooms/facilities. I can't remember the name of the hotel they mention but I would do a search on nyt.com

If you belong to Hilton HHonors, you can use points and stay at the Hilton for free. There are reviews in the Hilton forum on it. I stayed there; it is a pleasant property.

Conde Nast Traveller ran an article on 6 Mauritius hotels. As memory serves, though, they are all at the price point you want to avoid. Regardless, you should find some useful information on the island in the article.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info! I'm actually finding online specials at nice resorts in the $250-$350 range (which is doable for me) since we'll be going in the low season (early June) for decent deluxe rooms or junior suites.

HHonors isn't an option for me since it is a cat. 6 at 40k points per night and I don't have a prayer of getting enough in my account for more than a couple nights tops. Right now I'm looking at Le Meridien since I found a rate special through an agent online and it looks really nice.

Can you recommend resorts in particular? Areas of the island that are best?

Thanks!!!

peace,
~Ben~

How does Le Saint Geran price up from the US? My uncles family had a fabulous holiday there. They showed me the photos of 'The Villa' which was more of a house with private staff...You can get much more reasonable priced rooms though.

Have also heard good things about Le Tousserok

Well, hopefully.. I won't have the 240k in my account that I'd need for the two business class tickets available until the end of July and the availability for when I will want to go opens up about two weeks earlier (330 days in advance). I will probably book from Houston to Paris and then onto Mauritius on Air France and then while there do a seperate out of pocket side-trip to the Seychelles or Reunion. On the way back we'll go from Mauritius to Paris and have a three night stopover there (1 free stopover permitted on int'l awards) and return to either Houston or Philly depending on a number ofthings I have no idea about yet.

I'm hoping that being flexible with the exact return route and time of the stop will make it a little easier to find availibility for early June travel and mid June return, but I guess I won't find out until I try to book something in about a month.

Thoughts? More advice? What do you guys think about AF's J product?

peace,
~Ben~

PS> If I can't find award seats to Mauritius, I'll probably just pay out of pocket for Fiji or Tahiti, but I'm hoping I'll be able to use miles!
