Any recommendations for luggage that is strong and light... very light?
Apologies if this has been covered before but I've been trawling through hundreds of posts without success.
As the European and Asian airlines are so stringent with weight allowances, I was wondering which were the lightest cases on the market (either for hold or carry on) and if anyone has any personal recommendations.
My back isn't so strong, so wheels are very much preferred.
(I was looking at shops in New and Vegas a few months ago and I couldn't believe how heavy most of the cases were - guess most Americans don't have to worry about our miserable 20kgs allowance)

I like the TravelPro TPro (now replaced by the TPro Extreme). The 22" size is good for carrying on, and it weighs well under 8 pounds. I'm not sure there is a lighter 22" rollaboard. Check ebags or luggageonline.

I'm interested in this too, as my 30" bag (that I use about 1x a year) is testing the limits and exceeding the allowances - sometimes with a blind eye, sometimes with negotation, sometimes w/taking a few things out and stuffing the carry-on. Most of this is attributable to bag weight, not that it is stuffed. And LapLap, we in the US have 50lb allowances, which isn't much more than your 20kg.

Alas, even 8 pounds is too heavy for carry on as most of the airlines I take allow from 17.5 pounds/8kgs - which is the norm - to a really generous 22 pounds/10kgs woohoo! Staff can be pretty inflexible, I've had to take things out of my carry on bag before and put them in my pockets - in plain view of the check in staff in order to prevent the airline from putting the bag into the hold.
And thanks for clearing up that you guys do get 2 x bags - I've always admired North Americans for collectively refusing to put up with our miserable 44pounds travelling allowance (33pounds in some cases). I would have been so disappointed in you if you'd allowed that privilege to be erradicated.

I would double check those weights. I know of no Delsey Helium that weighs less than 8.5 lbs (= 3.9 kg), and that's for the 18" (= 46 cm) size.

That's very interesting. I guess I was only aware of their products in the US market (which the 50 CM suitcase you found seems not to be). I should have noted that you are in the UK.

I have had very good luck with Tumi (basic ballistic nylon), including repairs when they have been necessary (which has been infrequent for me)

It's simple and classy, and will protect your stuff - I've thoroughly abused a Delsey hardside suitcase for 8 years and this bag for a few months and never had any problems. The only caution might be if you like using pockets on the outside of the bag - these don't have any.

Lesportsac bags are really strong and light. They are soft sided and don't come with wheels. They are so light that you can carry them easily. If you do want wheels, you can pop them on one of those portable, foldable, wheely thingys.
