ORD based, sitting in DEN

According to www.kusa.com the NBC in DEN, it was based out of ORD and was "brought down" to DEN, where it has been sitting on the ground due to a threat on board.

According to CBS affiliate in Sacramento, a passenger went nuts half way through the flight, claimed to have a bomb and tried to open an exit door. A FA tried to stop him but couldn't. A couple of passengers were able to pin the man down. Plane was diverted to Denver, suspect taken into custody, passengers evacuated to a Denver terminal while bomb-sniffing dogs were brought onboard. Nothing found. Passengers will be boarding the same plane and are expected to arrive in Sacramento after 10 pm.

Apparently, the FBI is questioning two individuals: the unruly passenger and his brother who was also traveling on the same flight; other passengers indicated that the brother had tried to reason with the guy who went ballistic.

A Sacramento-bound United Airlines flight out of Chicago was forced to make an emergency landing Friday afternoon in Denver after a passenger described as "unruly" either attempted or threatened to open an exit door and then claimed there was a bomb on the plane.

The man, identified by FBI officials as Jose Manuel Pelayo-Ortega, was subdued by flight attendants and other passengers, handcuffed and then taken into custody by local and federal law enforcement officials at Denver International Airport.

That's what I saw at DIA yesterday!!!

I arrived at DEN early from Laramie and saw MANY police cars going down the taxi-ways. When we were on approach I saw what looked like an F-15. I saw a United Airbus parked in the parking area (was not at the gate), but I figured it was parked for maintenance.

Wow. Can't believe I was in the air by DEN when this all happened.

I was on Great Lakes Aviation, so there was no channel 9.

But if a United plane in the area had channel 9, then the captain would have most likely turned it off. It is at the captain's discretion, and they almost always turn it off during emergencies -- whether the emergency deals with a United flight or a different airline. At least, that has been my experience.

Am I correct in suspecting that it is physically impossible to open an exit door at altitude?

I hope you're correct. I'll try on my next flight and let you all know.
