Italy-wide Strike Imminent on Sept 6.

Just announced today that there will be an Italy-wide transportation strike that will include all trains, planes, buses, and other modes of public transportation (ie..Vaporetto in Venice, Metro in Rome, etc...).
Not sure if this will affect Air Traffic Controllers so non-Alitalia flights might be landing in Italy. Just a heads up....

Oh great!

And I was planning to arrive FCO that day.

Any source for this new report? And any indication as to how likely this is (i.e. it is very likely there will be a strike, or possible that there may be a strike, etc.).

Thanks!

Normally this site is helpful, but I don't see anything scheduled:
http://www.commissionegaranziasciopero.it/
On the left hand menu, click the bottom item, "elenco scioperi"
Scroll down to "transport aereo" (air transport), "Trasporto Ferroviario" (train transport), "Trasporto Pubblico Locale" (local public transit).

Remember, they use the European date format, so 02-08-06 is Aug. 2nd.

It might be too recent to be listed. There are news stories, like this one stating that they are planning a 24 hour strike of three unions: Anpac (commercial pilots), Anpav (flight attendants) and Avia (I think those are pilots)... and maybe Sult (transport workers).

Sult's website also talks about a 4 hour Sept. 18 strike at FCO, but that has a more limited target.

We need to keep an eye on this. I'll just miss you, I land at MXP on the 12th, depart FCO on the 17th.

(but if anyone wants to join me in the lounge at MXP the morning of the 12th for a drink, send me a PM)

As I live in northern Italy, I was listening to the Armed Forces Network Radio from US Army Garrison Vicenza. It was there that they made the announcement about the nationwide strike on Sept 6.

Great ... our MXP-LCA flight on CY (will the CY staff in Italy be on strike too?) is on 6 Sep and we were planning to take public transport (bus) to MXP on that day ... I presume the taxi drivers will be on strike too.

Time for plan B (hotel airport on the 5th) or plan C (rental car? ).

Here's another link regarding the strike.

No airport hotel worthy of the name at MXP...

Bear in mind that a transport strike in Italy doesn't mean that there will be no public transport running. The law requires that certain services are guaranteed even in the case of a strike. If I remember correctly, this includes some Malpensa Express train services.

Unfortunately, the Malpensa Express site doesn't indicate which services these are from its timetable.

I'm almost certain that the services in question are indicated on the timetables posted on the platforms (with a dagger or something to indicate 'servizi garantiti in caso di sciopero') however.

Is the Malpensa Express listed in the yellow FFSS schedules? (sold at tobacchi stores for a few euro, updated every 6 months).

If so, could someone in Italy look to see if it is shown as running during the strike?

Will it be over the next day (9/7/06?)

When they say '24 hour strike,' do they usually MEAN a 24-hour strike? We'll be arriving from LCA to FCO on Sept. 7th. Can we expect things to be back to normal then (airport express train, subways, busses, etc?)
Thanks,
BB.

Well, it's sort-of-operated by FNM so I would guess not.

So what can one do if booked to fly AZ on the 6th (which I am), do I wait until closer the date or go to an AZ ticket desk and ask to be put on flights the following/previous day?

Chances are the person dealing with the request won't even know of the strike...

And if they do know of it, they'll probably figure it's like so many Italian strikes, and will get cancelled or rescheduled at the last minute. So for that reason they won't want to help you reschedule your flight.

so I guess you're better off trying close to the date, although that leaves your plans uncertain.

The taxi drivers are usually not on strike (one man company) but the cost of a transfer from MXP to Milan (one way) can be in the in the range of 70-100 EUR... if there's a traffic jam it could even double.

I was recently informed there's a new Crowne Plaza near MXP that should not be too bad, but I have no first hand experience yet.
