Goodbye CKS...It's Official!

This has created a big stir here in Taiwan. Here is the link to get the latest news. The whole thing seems sort of crazy to me but people I talk to locally seem to like the idea--or have no opinion at all. Seems many are stuck between a rock and a hard place as many dislike the current president and want to depose him, but don't want to follow his lead of renaming the airport.

I guess the president of Taiwan has no other pressing issues than to rename everything.

Exactly!! Like I said, the country is trying to depose the president with a million man march in Taiepi. This will be going on for the next 3 weekends. So, my guess is the president is trying to any rabbit out of the hat.

Exclamation Goodbye CKS. Hello TTI.

Yes, it is offical. Tonight, 9/6 at 8:00pm TST, the news reported that Chiang Kai Shek International Airport (CKS) is no more! It is now renamed Taiwan Touyuan International Airport. It will keep its official TPE code.

Intersting tidbit on the news along with this is that to make it easier to pronounce, they shorten Taiwan Touyuan to Tai Tou. In the mother tongue, Taiwanese, "tai tou" means 'cut off your head'.

Hello?! You'd think the Chen government might consider that before renaming.

Here is the link from the IHT. I'm still working on the local papers.

CKS at least had some historical significance. How are non Chinese speaking folks going to figure out Taoyuan?

Well, the Guillotine certainly revolutionized French politics - a sign of things to come in Taiwan?

(Relax, I'm joking... )
