I don't know to whom you're referring, the individual who lit the matches, or all of the various people who reacted. An elderly relative, now deceased, experienced severe flatulence after a colostomy and related problems. She was sensitive about its effects on others, and often lit matches.

That's why I don't think the comment by the spokeswoman for the Nashville International Airport Authority is necessarily accurate:

"It's unusual that someone would go to those measures to cover it up."

I don't know why cabin crew couldn't have simply asked if anyone had lit a match on board. The passenger probably would have 'fessed up and saved everybody a lot of grief.

What!

I'm sorry...but why the hell would a flight attendant ask if anyone lit a match?Um, Federal law prohibits smoking on a plane, so, why would you need to use matches on board an aircraft...to light your scented candle?

People are really stupid....just fart, and get over it. Or better yet, go to the bathroom and release....If I were a pax on that flight, I'd be f-ing pissed!

Your solutions don't apply to people with severe conditions. My late relative could have literally stunk up the back half of a 737 if she were experiencing her problems at their worst.

I'm just proposing a version of Occam's Razor. Why not ask? What is there to lose? If a passenger were up to something truly nefarious and evil involving matches and/or sulfur, he'd probably rush to carry it out anyway once he knew the plane was being diverted.

Just some more data on this:
While it is legal to bring as many as four books of paper safety matches onto an aircraft, it is illegal to strike a match in an airplane. Feeling compassionate for the poor woman's embarrassment, American Airlines has banned her from flying their airline for an indefinite period of time.

Hmmmmm.......

Its a shame that the person did not get charged. Honestly, if you force a plane to emergency land, that is something that should be taken more serious. Hopefully, american bans that person from traveling.

For lighting a match or for committing flatulence?

She simply did not follow the correct procedure. Rather than lighting a match, she should have just got a disgusted look on her face and loudly and in a demanding voice blurted out, "alright,,,WHO FARTED?". Then the other passengers would just have looked suspiciously at one another and the flight could have continued undisturbed. While this does not solve the "she who smell't it dealt it" issue, it still would be preferable. As it is, I am concerned that our government was unable to scramble some F-16's in time to escort the plane in. Terrorists may see that as weakness and believe they can start farting in aircraft with impunity. Really this is all an unintended consequence of the smoking ban. If she had been puffing away on a Marlboro circa 1987, none of this would have had to happen.

Had to be a woman. A man would not have cared. Before you jump that as a sexist remark you should know that I was just quoting my wife.

I agree that the person who forced the plane to land because a match or two was lit should be charged.

Arrest that pilot!

It is lunacy to have gone through all of this when there was no danger. The offender could have been confronted and given a ticket (say for $50.00) and all the hysteria could have been avoided.

With all due respect, your wife is wrong.

I used to go out with a guy who'd suddenly jump out of bed, dissappear in to the bathroom only to come back a couple of seconds later. After a couple of weeks I had to ask.

He ran to the bathroom as he didn't want to break wind in bed while I was there.

His way of showing consideration. I thought it was sweet but also rather silly.

No street cred.

My apologies. I'll ask the mods to merge these threads.
