Your favourite laptop for travel....

Well, I find myself in a situation where I need a laptop, now to be honest I have enough crap to carry around with me when I travel, everything from digital camera, cell phone, pda/gps, ipod, psp and chargers or any combination thereof.

I recently saw a perfect Sony Vaio with a 10.4 inch screen, but sheesh, its expensive...

I want small and light, it needs WiFi AND a network port (hotel rooms...) and I need a DVD player in it.

What do you use/recommend?

I was looking hard at the Fujitsu P series as my needs are very like yours but in the end I dropped my demand for a DVD drive and bought the one-spindle IBM/Lenovo X60. My company's ~50% IBM EPP discount helped tip the scales, though...

My Dell 700m (pre-HD failure... thanks a lot Toshiba! ) has worked out great! Has everything you talked about, plus an SD reader built in. Also, terrific screen.

All for a grand total of $700-some-odd.

I'm still using my Thinkpad T43. Given that my rolling computer bag weighs in around 25 lbs, saving 1-2lbs with an ultralight laptop isn't that important to me.

I've been using a VAIO TR-3A for over 2 years. It has everything I need for travel.

Well, whilst im not an apple fan, I have approached this with quite an open mind. I think I really want to stay around the 10" mark on screen size I think.

Thinking about the CD drive I guess i can survive a few weeks abroad without one actually....

The new VAIO I saw was perfect in every sense, but it was massively overpriced, i figured at least $500 more just for the name, and thats a little OTT.

I saw a pretty decent Toshiba, but the guy was telling me that Toshibas now only have a 3 month warranty, which put me off a little.

I no longer work for Apple, so I'm free to speculate now, as long as it's not based on anything I did before jumping ship. ...And nothing I did (at least in the last couple of years) gave me any clue on upcoming releases.

Anyway, it might be worth waiting until after MacWorld to see what comes out. There have been some rumors on the web about a smaller portable.

I love my Sony Vaio TX 670P/B. It's light, holds @ a 4.5 hr battery charge and fits perfectly atop a plane's tray table.

Funny thing is I didn't need/want the top o' the line DVD burner option but because they were more popular that model actually cost less than the Vaio with only a CD burner.

fyi, I hear the updated Vaio TXN15P/W holds a 9+ hr charge. Sweeeet....

I like Vaio's but they are too sensitive. They can't take a beating like Thinkpads can. So I have a tiny X60S now.

But the absolute coolest PC I have seen is the new Samsung Origami.

Really that would be great. Although I love my MCB pro 15 it is heavy.
