Do you mind living in a hotel room where people died in it?

a friend of mine checked into a hotel for several nights. he mentioned in a conversation where he lived and the room number because it was easy to remember or something. the locals hushed up immediately and when pressed informed my friend a husband killed his wife and then shot himself in the head afterwards, 9 months ago in that hotel room. it was a very famous case for the locals.

would you have complained to the hotel in this case or keep sleeping in it?

Interesting question. About 2 months ago I got upgraded in New Delhi to a suite on the club floor at the Taj. While escorting me to the room the lady at reception mentioned that she would be scared to stay in large hotel rooms given that there are "ghosts" in the hotel. That definitely took the fun away from my upgrade!

Ouch. To be honest, I would have a tough time sleeping in the room, just as a matter of my perception.

In this case, provided I'd already had a night or two in the room before I found out, it probably wouldn't bother me. But it would depend on the general feel of the room, and how sensitive I was feeling at the time.

If I knew about the room at the time of check-in though, I'd politely ask for a different room.

OTOH, I'm sure there is a entire market of people who'd go out of their way to stay in a room like that.

No, what difference does it make whether someone was killed there or not? I would expect a clean room, though.

As for ghosts: I'd just laugh out loud.

well in case someone dies on the plane the body is then put in a toilet and locked... in relation to the above, do you also wanna discuss the issue of using an aircraft toilet where there could have been a dead body before?

Give me a break. As long as any bodily effluvia had been cleaned adequately, what the hell do I care if someone went to their final reward there? I'm sure that in any given hotel room there has been so much freaky stuff going on prior to my arrival that a death in the room would be far LESS disturbing than whatever was going on in there that resulted ambulatory participants afterwards.

Having said this, I have stayed in a couple of hotels where the only thing missing was the chalk outline where they found the body. The AmericInn in DeKalb, IL and the Travelodge in Glove, AZ leap to mind. The Hampton Inn in Topeka, KS was pretty mangy and the Red Lion in Twin Falls, ID actually offended me. The Ridpath hotel in Spokane, WA had the TV wired to the light switch so it was not possible to go to sleep with the TV on.

I found the Melrose (formerly the Barbizon) in Manhattan to be not much better than a prison cell complete with a ten minute wait for an elevator, a room the size of a postage stamp, a weak shower with a drain that took several hours to empty the tub, and an air conditioner in NYC in July that was more useful as a noisemaker than any kind of cooling system. Hundreds of dollars a night and non-existent parking when I would have had more room to myself at Rikers Island. But, that bartender poured generously and often!!

I'm sure there are many other things done in hotel rooms that would bother me more than someone dying in it.

In college, we used to stay in the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City during the NAIA National Tournament every year. We all remember what happened there I think. I felt a little odd hanging out on the balcony but never had a problem sleeping in the hotel room itself.

if it didn't matter to you when you didn't know about it, why not just put it out of your mind and not have it matter to you after?

We have a relatively high murder rate in the small city and county where I live - 15 per 100,000 population last year in the county - 4 times that for the city. The local paper covers the stories as well as you might expect. At least one murder was in a motel room. There have been others in prior years, including a murder/suicide. The room number is never mentioned. I wouldn't expect it to be. Even had I known the room number, I wouldn't remember it 9 months later. I have my doubts about the story told to the OP.

And I wouldn't care if I stayed in a room where a murder took place 9 months ago. As many nights as I spend in a hotel room, I've probably slept with more than 1 ghost.

I've always wanted to take a bath in Room 317 of the Beau Rivage.

(Hope someone appreciates this. Or have all the Germans ceased reading these threads?)

I don't mind as long as I didn't find out about it before my stay.

I don't see what difference it makes. Even sillier are those who won't stay on floors with certain numbers.

If the body was still there or if the chalk outline is still visible I would probably ask for a different room.

If not, I would care less.
