overlapping forum title?

Has anyone else found it confusing
that this forum is titled LATIN/Central America?

Mexico and South America are also LATIN.
For clarity seems logical to just remove the word LATIN.
Sorry if this has been discussed before.

If a few others agree,
then who is the correct person to send the suggestion to?
The moderator, or Talkboard?

I tend to agree. A good explanation can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_America

Note that Latin America also encompasses the Caribbean (which also has its own forum).

I am going to move this post to the Talkboard forum for Talkboard's consideration.

You are right when you say that South America and Mexico, each of which has its own forum, are part of Latin America.

That does not, however, mean that the forum title is wrong.

Paris is part of Europe, yet it has its own forum. That does not make the "Europe" forum title incorrect.

Basically, the forum title for a large geographic area means that it covers everything in that area which does not have its own forum. If Israel or Egypt were to get its own forum tomorrow, the "Middle East" forum title would remain unchanged.

So you suggest that "Latin/Central America" forum covers general issues of this area. According to this logic, though, it would be better to drop the "Central" from the forum title, as Latin America is the most encompassing geographical area.

True, but in the case of Paris/Europe, the Paris forum appears both on the main "The World" list and as a sub-forum under Europe. This is not the case for Latin/Central America, Mexico, and South America.

It would seem to this observer that to be consistent, we ought to either drop the Latin from Latin/Central as originally suggested, or add a "subforumesque" link to Mexico, etc. under the Latin/Central forum, a la Europe & Paris, South America & Argentina, etc.

You are probably right about dropping "Central" from the title and leaving it at just "Latin America". The problem, however, is that a lot of people -- even frequent travellers -- are very bad at geography and have no idea of what "Latin America" consists of.

I think that without "Central" being there, they would be putting posts about Panama and Costa Rica in the "South America" forum.

My guess is that most folks regard "Latin America" as everything from Tijuana down the Tierra Del Fuego. (Or indeed Miami to TDF!)

"Central America" make sense

"South America" makes Sense

"Mexico" make sense

I agreed with the OP, to drop the Latin.

Where, then, would you put the Caribbean Islands? They are certainly not part of Central America.

It might be a worthwhile idea to get rid of the Cuba forum (a very underused one) and make a Caribbean one instead -- and then dropping the Latin.
