Arrow Hotel Rumbao, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Puerto Rico [Master Thread]

Tishman Realty and Puerto Rico’s Hotel Development Corp. Acquire the 240-room Wyndham Old San Juan Hotel & Casino; Will Rebrand Sheraton

Tishman Hotel Corporation Simultaneously Becomes New Manager

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, February 4, 2004 —

Old San Juan Associates LP, SE today closed on the purchase of the 240-room Wyndham Old San Juan Hotel & Casino situated on the waterfront in the historic section of Puerto Rico’s capital. Old San Juan Associates is a limited partnership that includes affiliates of Tishman Realty Corporation and Puerto Rico’s Hotel Development Corporation (HDC), a subsidiary of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. Affiliates of Tishman Realty, in joint venture with other investors, also own the Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort & Golf Club in Rio Grande on the Island.

The new owners plan a $7-million upgrade of the hotel that will include complete guestroom and corridor renovation; upgrading the casino, including new slot machines; creating additional, prime, bay-front meeting space; and re-designing and relocating the indoor/outdoor restaurant. Upon completion of the renovation, the brand will be converted to Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ upscale Sheraton brand, marking the entry of Sheraton Hotels & Resorts into Puerto Rico...

Update.

I just called the Platinum Concierge line. This property is scheduled to become a Starwood property in December, 2004. They want to complete the remodeling and upgrade prior to rebranding.

Arrow Old San Juan Sheraton, Puerto Rico [Master Thread]

I was just looking for rates at the Westin, and was surprised to see this:

Now accepting reservations for arrival on or after December 7, 2004.

In the heart of historic and romantic old San Juan lies the Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel. Our hotel is ideally located on the waterfront where grand cruise ships dock.

We're just steps away from world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment including over 52 restaurants, 33 art galleries, 12 museums, and 79 stores including Coach, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Versace just to name a few. We are also only six miles from the International airport.

This appears to be different from the Convention Center Hotel mentioned in

well, i am here right now. upgraded to a suite although i wasn't asked about my amenity choice at check-in...will have to do that when i check out. the staff is very nice although not super-competent.

this hotel has clearly been through the wars. most furniture, etc. is somewhat banged up in my room. i am on the 8th floor of the 9 floor property. my rate included full american breakfast for two, $20 in casino match chips, and two welcome drinks.

if you can get the Sheraton Sleeper rate, it's a great deal for all it includes, including the 10K points and $50 gift certificate for a future visit (although i am not sure if there is an expiration date on the GC).

this hotel has one of my biggest pet peeves.....the doors are on super-spring load. so, when anyone closes their room door....SLAM. since i am in a suite and there aren't many doors around it, it only bothers me every so often. but, if i was in a room on a main hallway, i would be batty right now.

the casino is very small and permits smoking. there is no craps table (my game). the pool and gym are on the top floor. the pool is small but nice. the hot tub is tiny. the area to lay out is very small and the fixtures cause quite a bit of shade. it is packed right now...with all six people laying out. the gym is small and pretty inadequate. i am probably going to try to find a real gym later in the day.

there are only two small, slow elevators. i have only had one significant wait time...but i could see this being a problem. the elevator on the right is quirky. last time i was in this elevator, it kept wanting to return to the first floor after dropping one person off. everyone kept having to re-enter their floor numbers at every stop lest it would return to the bottom.

overall, a nice property. it will be nicer when starwood gets their hands on it and fixes it up. it used to be the wyndham in old san juan and the bathroom screams holiday inn.

one other thing. when i logged into the high speed internet access in the room, it said the rate was $0. we'll see when i logged out. if this is true, YIPPIE.

off to the westin rio mar manana.

edited to add:

1) the elevators are limited. it would be very helpful if the Door Closed button worked. there is no reason for the door to stay open many seconds after the one person waiting has entered the cabin. :

2) when i entered my room, i noticed two 12 oz. bottles of water. these were replaced the first night along with two DELICIOUS chocolate chip cookies. the second night, sugar cookies were provided but no H2O.

3) the internet connection is VERY tempremental. just posting this edit was a problem. i keeping getting an error after hitting "Save Changes" that the "Document Has No Data"...whatever that means.

Stayed at the hotel in December. Upgraded to a suite on the 3rd floor. Lounge was fine, gym was ok, but some of the machines didn't work.
Location was excellent - a ten minute walk to the heart of Old San Juan.
I'd stay there again.

i'm sure there is valet but it is worth noting that there is a huge multi-level parking lot about a block from the property.

I saw that $130 rate for latter January actually (AAA) so yes it does exist. Be mindful that SJU is a MASSIVE cruise driven business and pre and post stays can wipe out all hotels if you pick the wrong days.

But with $26 taxes to add to $130 thought 3000-4000 points was a smarter deal. (For me anyway)

Mary,

Ozstamps is correct about finding that rate. Interestingly enough, the cruise line wanted USD 800 for the same 3 nights at this same hotel to add it on to a cruise booking as a 'hotel package'. Buyer beware.

Actually not, staying in April. Just booked two nights, one on points and one for cash. I am frustrated that I miss out on the point bonus because of my dates. I did read some HORRIBLE reviews of this hotel on www.cruisecritic.com by people who have stayed there recently. I am hoping they will do some renovations prior to my stay. What date are you sailing?

I just stayed at the old san juan sheraton this past sunday.
I found it to be an excellent hotel. I paid a somewhat high price of $189 a night for the room, but was upgraded to a corner suite. But for a cat 2 hotel using 3000-4000 points a night, it is very good value for the points.
Its right in old san juan. Sure the furniture and carpeting might need some updating, but overall I would stay here again.

I'll be going there in April. Any idea about cheap parking? I hear it's $25/night -- which is excessive I think. Thanks in advance.

I asked this question earlier in the thread. Someone said: "i'm sure there is valet but it is worth noting that there is a huge multi-level parking lot about a block from the property".

Not sure what that runs to with overnight - anyone have an idea?

Our situation is we have a rental for the 7 days we are in Puerto Rico for $185 (++).

I thought I'd be wise and drop it off at old San Juan Avis after 5 days and walk around the last 2 days and cab it to airport which I think is a pretty cheap cab fare right?

Avis website for 5 days, same car, same discount code gave me $235 (++).

So unless parking is high it is worth keeping it. Weird.

Or maybe someone else from experience can suggest a rental co that allows a SJU pick up and downtown drop off at a decent rate?

Great stay. Nice modern room on Club floor which is open about 5 hours each night with hot food. Nice breakfasts. No issue with 4pm check out etc.

No idea where the bad rap for this place comes from.

I am sure like all hotels they have a block of tour group/airline crew type basic rooms, but anyone with any status at all will not score those I bet.

Re parking, I found I could dump the rental at the Avis office 100 yards away. And cab it to airport for $16 when it suited. Saved the hassle with that mad traffic AND the parking.

I'm doing a quick trip to SJU in mid June and was intending not to rent a car (any idea how much a taxi from the airport to the Sheraton would run)?? I wanted to stay in OSJ area, and figured the Sheraton would be perfect, but now I'm not so sure, and so am currently thinking of 1 night at the Sheraton (AAA rate of $129) and the next (final) night at El Convento, supposedly the 'new' top place to stay in OSJ ($235). Any comments on recent stays at either ? I'm travelling solo, and was planning to just explore the area and didn't really have any desire to be in the beach area. My other choice (vs El Convento) would have been the Ritz Carlton, but that seemed a bit further away. And call me insane, but I really don't mind switching hotels after one night (after all I will get my stay/points and a possible Plat upgrade at the Sheraton )

mauld - as I stated in my post immediately before yours, cab price was $16 from Sheraton. However cabbies in SJU are pretty "famous" for overcharging tourists. They insisted on $1 per bag plus tip. I said I was happy to load the bags each end, and they said it was a cost 'tourists need to pay' even if they did not set foot outside of cab. They seemed fixed on this.

As posted my recent stay and room was excellent. Another Member had graphic tales of woe this week, but it may well have been his attitude to staff, who knows? :
