Best Y & J seats on 767-338?
Booked to fly SYD - HNL return on QF3/4 in a couple of weeks and am attempting to upgrade to J with points. Has anyone flown this route lately and can advise on which seats in Y and J are the coveted seats and if you can request them at checkin? Looks like the service they are running on that route is currently the 767-338 with 25J seats/204 Y seats.. Appreciate any advice. Thanks

If you want to upgrade, get on the waitlist NOW.
Priority then goes to who got on the waitlist first (at 90 days prior) and by status.
Your opportunities for choosing J seats through this process are limited - just be grateful if you do get the upgrade. As for WHY seats, the wing exit rows are always the preferable ones (but can get cold).

If that's the same config as I flew NRT-BNE (and I think it is), then subject to Og's comment, if you snag the upgrade, ask if they have an "A" seat if you are travelling alone. The config in J is 1-2-2 so the "A" seats are window and aisle, all in one.

Here is my selection of 'best seats'
For Business Class the A seat as mentioned is nice if your travelling alone.
In Economy there are several seats I personally would choose from and here they are
23ED are a pair of seats at the front of economy - You'll get served first, both seats have aisle access and are right in front of the movie screen. One thing to note you are right next to the only bassinet in economy.
24F is an aisle seat and has no seat in front of it. You'll be first served and has a clear view of the movie screen.
26AB are good seats because the seats infront will be unoccupied as the pilot crew rest extends into the area of 25AB preventing them from been used - so no body can recline into your space. You'll also be served first and can see the movie screen too.
The exit row seats are obviously most wanted. If you can get 35AB or JK as opposed to 34AB or JK you'll get more leg room. But again as mentioned it does get a bit chilly. Note that 34AB & JK are next to the toilets but are infront of movie screens.
35DEF are in front of the movie screen but your leg room is reduced because of this being a bulkhead seat.
53AB & 55JK are nice if you want to be able to recline the whole flight but be away from the toilets and galley. This is because 54AB are crew rest seats so will be unoccupied during meal service and 55JK are the last row on the right hand side. But beware you'll be last to be served so might miss out on your choice of meal.
Seats from row 49 back are able to see the TV monitors from the ceiling at row 48 and are nice because you can recline and look directly up as opposed to having to look forward.
Avoid any seat in row 30 - they are all in front of the toilets.
