The Continental Golden Jet SST - On Order For the 1970's

Continental Airlines SST "Golden Jet" Booklet - Amazing This pamphlet is truly "the future that never was"!

One of those unique items on eBay! Pretty detailed description here. My personal favorites: Los Angeles to Houston is 82 minutes and mention of vertical take off/landing.

Very cool, it is over $40 already with nearly a day to go.

Did CO at one time hub in Chicago?

Before deregulation, airlines didn't have hubs. Things were pretty much point-to-point.

DL has always had what is now called a "hub" at ATL (UA at ORD and DEN, and the old Braniff at DAL, too). DL's schedules were built to generate more traffic via connections at ATL than point-to-point across their system since the early sixties....

Does anyone know the backstory on why these plans failed?

ROI.

They simply were not practical for the airlines to use.

The Concorde was successful for Air France and British Airways for 30 years; though not successful for the manufacturer.

And the sonic boom issue basically prohibits supersonic flights over the US. And there was the also the oil crisis in the early 70's.

They did turn an operational profit for BA and AF but would not have made economic sense overall if the respective governments hadn't heavily subsidized their development and manufacture.

I agree that the brochure is a great historical relic. How times have changed. But the bidding is now at $76 and that's a bit much for me.

Yes, times certainly have changed, but for the bettter? I'm not sure... We once dreamed of supersonic flight across the country... then we had jumbo jets running domestic routes... then we went to DC9s and 727s for feeder routes... but now as time and technology progress too many of use are stuck with RJs to get to places once served by planes with a real overhead bin that could hold a regular sized carry on... now I do good to get my winter coat up there, forget about my laptop bag.

IIRC, based upon the brochure and the link ot the artists conception, the version of SST (Super Sonic Transport) that CO was considering was actually the American-made competitor (with retractable wings) to the Anglo/French Concorde. I actually remember building plastic kit models of both. I believe the American decision not to proceed was based on economics and (as rkkwan states) concerns over sonic booms. Can any other FT'ers add more?
