Ryan Air to buy 50 787s to launch Transatlantic Service

Can I just assure everyone that I won't be flying across the Atlantic with Ryan Air. Still this is bound to have an impact on BA.

Full details here:

He expects sales of food, drink, duty-free goods and in-flight entertainment to be a major revenue earner
You have to buy your movie? Pfff!

How tempting it would be to use the infamous cattle prod right about now...

More importantly, does anyone know of any other airport, which has a name which is seven words long?

Yes, but there is to be a "premium" class on these services.

I wonder if that will mean that you get a seat back TV with Michael O'Leary shouting expletives at you for those wonderous 8 hours it takes to cross the atlantic.

This airport with a very long name apparently somewhere near NYC, is this the equivalent to many Ryanair flights in Europe where they land at an airport that is 6 weeks drive away from where you wanted to go??????

I think that's pretty standard on some Amercian airlines and discount airlines in Australia too (well, you can watch for free but you pay for earphones).

Can you just imagine Americans landing at Hahn?

Plus I think the lack of connecting traffic (i.e. interlining - they would be free to book seperate flights) might hinder them a bit.

For anyone long enough in the tooth to remember (thank you PUCCI) Laker Airways used to fly across the pond with either a 'bring your own food on-board' or 'buy some food from the cabin crew' option. As a, at the time, poor university student I last flew their DC-10 'Skytrain' between JFK and LGW in January 1978.

Is it not premature to be making fleet plans of such size when the open-skies agreement has not even been finalised? I cannot see how they will present much of a threat to the likes of BA anyway, when they only fly to the middle of nowhere and butt-f*ck-Eygpt; they might siphon off some once-a-year leisure travellers, but there are enough other passengers to fill those seats.

No, but I did fly from there once. Am sure it was just called Islip at the time though...

I have flown from Islip (think it did have the full name as well but that is what it is known as locally) and it is a tiny airport and is a good 2 hours drive from Manhatten, I think their is an OK train service.

Sadly it is quite handy for one of my clients coupled with (presumably) Stanstead at this end could save me 5-6 hours 'vs LHR - JFK so might be a consideration, on the other hand it might not...

I don't know, I very rarely watch an in-flight movie, it's usually second rate Hollywood dross. I'll watch one of the half-hour series if they're decent, but otherwise usually read & do the crossword. I can't be the only one.

As a Brit who spends 10 months of every year working in that fine country I would like to correct one statement in your post - it should read butt-f*ck-Egypt.

US airline jetBlue offers free earphones but you pay $5 by swiping a credit card next to the personal video screen if you want to watch a movie. Live TV is free.
