Jakarta: Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons

The 4S is US$135 for a weekend stay, the RC is $160 but comes with club access which I certainly would make use of.

Alternatively there is the Mandarin Oriental which has rooms from $109 (!) and $149 for a club room.
Any recommendations?

The Ritz-Carlton is a property with very comfortable rooms, and is also my hotel of choice in the city.

Oh, but it's not the FS/RC so it can't be good or luxurious.

BTW, the FS and MO have seen better days in Jakarta and not worth the $!

Definitely not the MO! It's probably the saddest and worst in the chain. (I am a member at their gym, and it's pretty bad. Luckily my membership runs out in a month!)

I haven't seen the rooms at 4S or RC, but as far as dining and public areas, I prefer the RC a bit more.

However, in Jakarta, your choice of hotel is usually dictated by where you need to go, as traffic is horrendous in this city. Simply getting to the other side of a main road can take half an hour with a tricky series of left, right and U turns.

Just wanted to report back for the benefit of future travellers. I decided on the RC and did not regret the choice, in fact found it a wonderful hotel. The staff are excellent (although not quite as sophisticated as their 'neighbours' in SIN), and the rooms very large and well appointed with massive LCD screens and beautiful bathrooms with Bvlgari amenities. The club checkin and checkout were seamless and the food presentations excellent (b'fast was a bit small, as usual in club lounges it seems). Champagne served (not on display but they'll happily get it for you) was Moet.

On entering the room I found a large plate with chocolates and a varied fruit platter (not like the rather boring selections you often get). At night the turndown service left behind a small tension-relieving cream - nice touch.

The pool is nice and the spa facilities excellent (and massages cheap!).

Had I not stayed in a club room, I am not sure I would have enjoyed it quite so much. The lobby was busy with weddings and people milling about. But this applies equally to other hotels.

All in all, VERY impressed, especially considering the rate ($160).

If you are looking for the best hotel in town, perhaps the best city hotel in Asia, the Dharmawangsa is where you want to be. It is a magnificent place.

Many complain about needing to go to Jakarta. Once you stay at the Dharmawangsa however, you will be angling for more assignments in Jakarta. Its that good.
