OT: Airport Bomb Talk Will Get A Warning Instead Of Jail Time

http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_12743.aspx

Airline travelers won't be arrested for making stupid comments, but they should still watch what they say. A recent security bulletin sent to all airport screeners strongly suggests they use more discretion when deciding whether a passenger is joking or not.

However, that still doesn't mean you should joke about having a bomb in your suitcase, because you'll still get arrested and have a number of uncomfortable things happen to you.

...like a cavity search.

Hmm... Seems like a bit of a contradiction here.

I'd just like to know, is this really a problem? How many people have actually walked up to the security check making wisecracks about bombs? Seems like that would only be an issue with a special kind of stupid person I have yet to meet.

You would be very surprised to find it ain't the IQ challenged that do this most often, but rather doctors, teachers and, in one case that comes to mind, the BMO local bank branch manager. Smart people can still say stupid things, which I'm constantly reminded of on a daily basis, usually by myself.

I don't think this would change anything; the guards will still give you the full treatment if you say something stupid.

Specifics of what is and isn't appropriate

(note, I didn't see this thread before posting in the Travel Safety/Security forum).

Some of the comments that are deemed appropriate and inappropriate, as found in the Ottawa Sun today. http://www.ottawasun.com/News/Nation...29759-sun.html

ILLEGAL COMMENTS

- The person over there is carrying a bomb.
- I have a bomb in my bag.
- There's a bomb in the washroom.
- The bag I checked in upstairs contains an IED (improvised explosive device).
- I am going to set fire to this airplane with this blowtorch.
- I've got plastic explosives that can blow up this airport.
- I'm going to blow up this airplane over the Atlantic.
- The man in seat 32F has a machine gun.

COMMENTS PROMPTING WARNINGS ONLY

- Do you think I have a bomb in my suitcase?
- There's no bomb in my shoe.
- What do you think I look like, a terrorist?
- Hi Jack!
- My gun misfired when I was hunting this weekend.
- This security does nothing to stop hijacking.
- Your hockey team is going to get bombed!
- You don't need to frisk me, I'm not carrying a weapon.

I can certainly see why the "illegal" comments are such, they are clearly inappropriate comments that should be taken seriously. However, the "warnings" comments? What's wrong with criticizing the security?

This should come in handy at Pearson given the pathetic nature of the MakeBeLeafs.

Are these comments only illegal if you are lying? For instance, if the man in seat 32F really does have a machine gun, are you allowed to point that out?

What if you combine a "warning" comment with an "illegal" comment? For instance:

"This security does nothing to stop hijacking. For instance, the man in seat 32F has a machine gun."

Inquiring minds want to know!!!
