Listing child-related policies by airline?

I observe that this forum has no stickies. Would it be sensible to have a thread collecting and comparing the child/related policies of various airlines?

Unaccompanied minors

Let us try and start the list of policies, ordered in the order that the forums are listed.

Aer Lingus
http://www.aerlingus.com/cgi-bin/obe...flightInput.do

Compulsory UM service

Aer Lingus does not accept reservations for unaccompanied children under 12 years of age for travel on Aer Lingus scheduled services.

Children under 12 years of age cannot travel unless accompanied by an adult aged 16 years or older, who will take responsibility for the child.

Aer Lingus will continue to accept passengers aged 12-15 years inclusive but will not provide special assistance for these passengers. A Form of Indemnity for unaccompanied young passengers must be completed by a parent/guardian with respect to such passengers at each airport of departure.

Infants

Infants (under 2 years) who travel on a parent's lap are charged at 10% of adult fare, plus taxes. For comfort and convenience you may wish to consider purchasing a seat for your infant. To do so, proceed by booking your infant as a child at the applicable child fare and bring your aviation authority approved forward facing car safety seat on board the aircraft.

If an infant turns two years old after the outbound journey but before the return journey:

Children over the age of two must travel in their own seat. If an infant is two years old for any part of the journey they must purchase a seat or alternatively make two separate bookings one for the outbound and one for the return.

Air Canada
http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelin...rs/minors.html

Compulsory UM service
Children aged 5 to 11 are only allowed to travel alone as UM-s.

UM service requires a fee of US$75 or CA$ 75 on top of the ticket price. All fares now allowed.

No connections allowed. Last flight of day forbidden, with exception for the only flight of the day.

Optional UM service
Children aged 12 to 15 are allowed to fly without UM services - and in this case, they appear to be allowed to take connections, last flights of the day, deep discounted tickets et cetera. However, they are not allowed to escort children 11 or less. They are also allowed to have optional UM services - in which case they apparently are not allowed to have connections or last flights.

Children aged 16 or 17 are allowed to have optional UM services - presumably with all accompanying restrictions. They are also allowed to escort children of any age - whether 5-11 or under 5. However, apparently in this case no assistance is available even paid for.

Adults 18 and over are not offered any assistance.

UM service must be requested and fee paid at booking. The escort must stay at originating airport till departure.

You wrote that no assistance service is available for kids/adults 18 and over. I think you are wrong. Someone over 18 would not be an UMNR - theyre not minors, but they could very well be so-called MAAS - meet and assist. This kind of assistance is somewhat loser, but someone will meet the kid, or in this case, young adult, at the jetway. This would be good when f.ex. language problems are involved.

By the way, I think I remember having an 18 year old UM with CO. Probably some parent thought that was best when flying internationally. The person picking her up was also 18. And listed as "boyfriend" under realation on the form... Way off-topic thou.

But have in mind, anyone can be a MAAS.

Note that Delta did indeed violate the letter of their UM policy by allowing a 10 year old brother to fly with his 10 year old sister. However, on many airlines it is allowed by the letter of their UM policy.

Frontier Airlines
http://www.frontierairlines.com/fron...nied-minors.do
  • We're sorry but we won't accept unaccompanied minors who are under five years of age.
  • Children under the age of five must be accompanied by an individual 15 years or older.
    ---
  • We consider children from ages five to 14 to be unaccompanied minors when traveling without a companion of at least 15 years of age.
  • Unaccompanied minors ages five to 14 are accepted only when non-stop service is available.
    ---
  • Children who are age 15 to 17 may also receive the benefits of an unaccompanied minor if the parent or guardian requests special supervision.
  • Although they can't vote or drive, passengers who are 15 years of age are defined as adults.
    ---
  • Children traveling unaccompanied pay a full adult fare. We charge a service fee of $40 per segment per child to cover extra handling and free DIRECTV® service.

United Airlines
http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1052,00.html
United offers unaccompanied minor service for children from 5-17 years of age.

The service is mandatory for unaccompanied minors 5 to 11 years old and optional for 12- to 17-year-olds. If the child is traveling as an unaccompanied minor, he or she may not travel on the last direct or connecting flight of the day. The fee is $99 USD each way (except to/from Japan).

5-7 years
Children ages 5-7 may travel on United flights that are nonstop or do not require a change of airplane. They may not travel on connecting flights. They may also travel on the last non-stop flight of the day.

8-11 years
Children ages 8-11 may travel on United non-stop, direct and connecting flights. (A direct flight makes a stop but there is no plane change.) They may also travel unaccompanied on connecting flights to other airlines. Children ages 8-11 are restricted from connecting to the last flight of the day which includes the last direct flight of the day. An exception can be made for children connecting to and from international flights.

12-17 years (Optional)
Unaccompanied minor service is available, but not required, for this age group. We strongly recommend that teenagers who are not using our unaccompanied minor service be confirmed on flights early in the day. Unanticipated delays or cancellations and unexpected weather such as fog, snow, thunderstorms or air traffic congestion may disrupt flight schedules and result in misconnections. If delays result in travel the following day, United may not be able to offer overnight accommodations since many hotels will not accept minors aged 17 or younger. If unaccompanied minor service is requested, standard fees will apply.

If a child aged 12-17 years is traveling as an unaccompanied minor, he or she will be accepted under the conditions specified for unaccompanied minors aged 8-11 years.

When two or more unaccompanied minors are traveling together, the most restrictive age requirement will apply. For example, an 11-year-old traveling with a 6-year-old may only travel on nonstop flights or flights that do not require a change of airplane.

Fees
There is a $99.00 fee for unaccompanied minors traveling on United flights worldwide. The fee applies in each direction of travel. Two or more children who are immediate family members traveling together will be assessed one fee each direction.

US Airways
  • Children under 5 may not travel without parent or legal guardian.
  • Children 5-14 may travel unaccompanied on non-stop flights for an additional $50 fee each way. US Airways assistance is required.
  • Children 15-17 may travel unaccompanied on non-stop and connecting flights without US Airways assistance.
  • Children 15-17 who require US Airways assistance may travel unaccompanied on non-stop flights only. There is an additional $50 fee each way. Uniformed employees provide assistance for children traveling alone from the point of departure to their final destination. Personnel are not qualified to provide certain types of medical assistance, and are not permitted to administer or dispense medication. Please take these points into consideration if the child requires specialized care.
  • If an unaccompanied minor is traveling on a flight operated by one of our Star Alliance or codeshare partners, you must contact the carrier directly for their policies on unaccompanied minors.

Odd features

Odd features that attract attention:

Aer Lingus stands out as a flag carrier that offers no UM service at all.

Asiana has a Family Service not only for youths, but the same service for elders and adults with children

KLM has the age of escorts depending on where the ticket was bought

United may not be able to offer overnight accommodations for those under 17.

Swiss offers escorting a small child and young teenager together.

Jetstar has the arbitrary definition of independent traveller, with start of secondary school as merely guideline.

My daughter flew in with Aer Lingus recently and I think their non-UM policy sucks. I did not book the ticket..so I had no control over what airline she flew, but I guess that is how they keep the flights so cheap.
