Paid Ugrades - OLCI or Mr Chicken?

I was reading through the Paid Gate Upgrades thread, and it got me thinking... If you're hoping for a paid upgrade at check-in, is it better to OLCI or visit Mr Chicken?

Also, if you OLCI and visit Mr Chicken at the airport to reprint your BP, is there any chance of being offered a paid upgrade at that time?

Thanks...

It is sometimes offered at OLCI, so you might as well give that a try. Otherwise, you can always ask when you get to the airport. If they are available for people checking in they will be available for you as well.

If using e500's for an upgrade and therefore wiatlisted after the 72 hour make (as a 1P), if I use OLCI, can I still request a paid upgrade at checkin therefore avoiding the possibility of losing an upgrade? I usually get the upgrade, but I end up as number 2 or 3 on the waitlist and sometimes I miss the upgrade by 1

Just curious.

When upgrades are waitlisted I do not believe that they accept paid upgrades, at least in my experience they have refused pd upgrades when others are wtlisted, thus it would not help your cause.

That's not what others have reported. There have been several reports on FT of people being offered paid upgrades at the gate and waitlisted upgrades not clearing.

No Buy-up opportunity from OLCI?

Travelling on an S-class E+ ticket ORD-LHR this evening (UA 938 dep 21:21). OLCI last night, no chance to pay the $649 to upgrade to C/J

What determines if you can do this? Availability is showing F8 P8 A6 C9 D9 Z9 Y9 B9 M9 H9 Q9 V9 W4 T0 S0 K0 L0 G0.

Thankfully I have 21J (best seat in the house IMHO) but still wanted to u/g.

What about my return flight on Sunday (UA 959 LHR-ORD dep 15:40)? Will I get the buy-up then from Mr Chicken? (OLCI not available outside US)

Availability for that is F6 P6 A5 C9 D9 Z9 Y9 B9 M9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 T9 S9 K9 L9 G0.

even if no offer from OLCI, try and ask at the "live" check in, or at the gate.

Last month three of us flew IAD-FRA on identical S fares. I used OLCI for all of us:

Me 1K: No upgrade offered.
Son no status: No upgrade offered.
Wife 3P (gifted): Upgrade offered.

Weird IMHO.

This is the key. The system can be very spotty, but lots of times they offer it in person and not with OLCI or even automatically when checking-in in person.

That is weird. Maybe they figure offering a buy-up to a 3P is akin to giving a little taste of the product to someone who might buy it for real in the future. Or maybe it's completely random.

Most likely answer and also the most disturbing.

Purchased upgrade on online checkin?

Does anyone know if the purchased upgrades that are offered at the checkin kiosks are also offered online during the 24-hour advanced online checkin?

And if it is not, is there still an opportunity at airport/kiosk if you use the online checkin?

Thanks!

Yes, they are. And if you use OLCI and dont get the offer, consider canceling the check-in and trying again at the airport. You can always ask the TA/GA if they are doing an "upsell" and you may just get lucky!^

Thanks!

My flight leaves at 2:19 tomorrow, so I'll be checking in about 20 mintues. I'm assuming the sooner the better my chances

In fact, I just got an email from United seeing if I wanted to do OLCI
