United decides to wash planes to save fuel. Will CO follow?
From CNN:
United contracts to wash engines regularly
United Airlines contracts with United Technologies unit to was engines regularly
June 11, 2008: 03:58 PM EST
NEW YORK (Associated Press) - UAL Corp.'s United Airlines said Wednesday it signed a multiyear deal to regularly wash its jet engines in an effort to cut down on jet fuel use and reduce carbon emissions.
United expects the agreement with Global Service Partners, a unit of United Technologies Corp.'s Pratt & Whitney engine division, will save 3 million gallons in jet fuel per year and lower emissions by about 30,000 tons. The deal involves a system United said was "more effective and much faster" than traditional engine cleaning.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"With unprecedented fuel costs, United continues to look for innovative solutions to save on jet fuel," Rick Wysong, United vice president for engineering, materials and planning, said in a statement.
UAL shares fell 99 cents, or 12 percent, to $7.26 in late afternoon trading, after earlier hitting $7.19, its lowest point since the company emerged from bankruptcy protection in 2006.
Or, I wouldn't be surprised that CO already has cleaner engines, since the planes look so much cleaner!

They're talking about cleaning the outsides (just the engines), not the innards. The extra cleaning will likely balance out for some of the duct tape used to hold the insides together.

Too Little, Too Late for UA

Washing engines might pay for a week or two of the new compensation package Tilton has arranged for himself and his cohorts. LK was very smart to run away from this POS merger.
QUOTE FROM ARTICLE
One thing that isn't in doubt, however, is the financial wherewithal of the airline's upper management.
Tilton and his top executives emerged from the bankruptcy with 8 percent of the new United Airlines and a fast-vesting bonus plan that the New York Times called "insanity squared." Many of United's management team have been flipping their shares as soon as they vested, yielding tidy profits as the airline's shares topped out above $50. But rather than curb their enthusiasm now that the market has soured on the airlines in general and United in specific, Tilton et al will pitch a new executive-incentive plan at the airline's annual meeting in California on Thursday. If approved, it will create 8 million new shares for the benefit of the top brass.
In other words, no matter how rough the ride for United's employees and passengers, it will continue to be smooth sailing in the executive suite.

It's about time. If you watch any UA aircraft take off, you will notice streams of soot spewing from the engines - unbelieveable.
