Is Marriott Discriminating Against Single Travelers?

Last week I was at the Courtyard Marriott River North in Chicago and I went to use the exercise facilities. To get to them, you have to go to the 6th floor and walk through the indoor pool area. Unfortunately, there is a sign which says that "no one can be in the pool area alone or in the pool alone."

I broke the rule to walk through. The next time I visit, should I call the front desk for an escort?

Well if two or more guests -- single or not -- end up being in the pool area or the pool, then it's all good.

Sounds like a "if you have a health issue while in the pool area or in the pool and we don't help you because no one knows you are there, it's not our fault" policy.

Yes, you should.

And please post back to this thread to report on how that conversation goes.

This is clear discrimination against you and you are deserving of compensation. Please let us know what you get.

I have seen this sign in a lot of places in the UK. I think it is basically a way of them avoiding having staff to watch out for any accidents / drownings!!

i.e. If you drown because you're on your own, don't blame us

I wouldn't have spent one minute worrying about that. I highly doubt Marriot wants to discriminate against you for being alone in a hotel, it probably helps if they get sued if a child drowns while alone.

If an employee comes into the pool area and tells you that you’re breaking the rule, just reply “Not anymore, I’m not!”

I'm at the STL Airport Marriott this week, which also makes me walk through the pool to get to the exercise area. I haven't noticed a no singles sign (but haven't looked for one). However, I HAVE noticed that the exercise room is 24 hours but the pool is only open until 10 or 11. How does THAT work?

Also, I'd like to add how dangerous it is that I have to get my sneakers soaked on the pool deck right before I hop on the treadmill. Stupid, and probably much more dangerous than being alone in the pool area.

I've never had this problem as me, myself, and I are perfectly capable of the extremely sophisticated life-saving technique known as:

Dude, Just Stand Up!

Well, that clearly isn't a problem if there are three of you there!

Having that sign is required by law. Enforced by the health department.

Wink

As gomike said, it is a required sign. Since you are just passing through the area and not using the pool area, the sign does not apply.

If you choose to ask the front desk for an escort, I'm sure they would tell you to proceed with caution by yourself. They would then have a good laugh at your expense.

Sometimes I wonder how humanity could survive for several millennia without all the warning signs we are obligated to have nowadays...

What a silly statement.

Humanity is defined as "surviving" even if 99.99% of it is eliminated, as long as the species continues to some degree. Thus not only do these signs not have any effect on humanity surviving, but neither do laws against murder!

Any such signs have at most a goal of increasing the number of individuals who survive (and without injury), not with "humanity" as a whole.

And humanity's survival rate used to be a lot worse a millenium or two ago than it is now. So there goes your theory!
