Continental OnePass Account Suspended

I got a registered letter in the mail from continental stating:

Dear ---,
It has recently come to our attention that mileage from your account was to be sold on the Craig's List site. The OnePass Program Guide clearly indicates that "rewards may not be sold, bartered, or purchased." Additionally, the Program guide warns that the above abuse may result in, "...membership termination, forfeiture of any Elite status, forfeiture of accrued mileage, reimbursement to Continental for the value of the travel, in excess of the fare paid by the debit of mileage from the member's OnePass account, and forfeiture of reward certificates and tickets issued against reward certificates."

As a result of this review, we have permanently closed your account and deleted the entire mileage balance. As outlined in the Program Guide, your OnePass card is the property of Continental Airlines and should be returned to the following address along with any reward certificates and or/tickets issued:

Any questions or concerns should be directed to the address below
Continental Airlines, Inc.
1600 Smith Street HQSSV
Houston, Texas 77002

Sincerely,
Continental Airlines, Inc
Belinda Gutierrez
OnePass Compliance Specialist

My problem is I have never listed, sold, or transferrd my account to anyone, not even on any website. I traveled recently out of the country, and just came back. I am angry that continental has taken this action without even asking me, and someone might have hacked into my account. I called their onepass customer center, and they said they cannot tell me anything, and I need to contact "Belinda Gutierrez." I will write a letter to them. What else should I do? I am just pissed that I am being accused of something that I haven't even done.

Do you share your email account with anyone else that has a OnePass acct?

Fight it. They have provided the specific contact and address, giving you an opportunity to challenge it. Write the letter, see what happens, and escalate if needed. If you reach a dead end inside of CO, look for external entities to address. But I'd start with the course they provided and see.

Mainly, give yourself a moment to calm down and focus before you do anything. You'll want to send in a letter that is concise, factual, and lays out your side of the story and what you'd like to see happen. I was wrongfully booted from another company's rewards program, and keeping a level head and professional interaction was key to having them take me seriously and change their decision.

What account activity might have caused CO to believe that you sold miles? Have you reviewed your account activity lately?

Welcome to FlyerTalk!

Continental doesn't want to hurt a customer who is doing nothing wrong. Get in touch with the company and straighten the thing out.

I always suspect either one of two scenarios - a forum memebr that does not want to be identified with a post, and there has to be a reason, or a non-forum member with other agenda or grievance (against the airline) that wants to take up the issue on FT. The usual natural history is that these posters remain on FT for the duration of the thread of concern, that they never contribute to any other discussion and then are never heard of again - there are numerous precedents. Of course there is the genuine first time post but this is the exception rather than rule.

I am sure if there is truth to the OPs allegations that CO insider will pick on this and rectify.

Here, here ^
I suspect the former, as the formatting on the post is nearly perfect. A newcomer typically won't take the time, or even know how to italicize.

I would have thought that a few years ago, but forum software like this one have been around for a long time. It doesn't take a rocket scientists to use paragraph breaks and italics.

Why bother questioning the OP's motives? They can clearly fight it if they actually have not done anything wrong. If they have then they wanted to gripe but it doesn't really matter. They will get their 15 minutes of internet fame and then they still won't have a OnePass acct. And I would not expect to hear from CO Insider about this one. No need for him to comment on such a situation and he has no details on the OP so he can't find out more without quite a bit of (unnecessary) work.

It seems unlikely that the account would be closed down without cause, particularly with a specific reference to where the violation occured. But if that is the case the OP now knows what to do to contest it.

The action of CO is definitely correct, in suspending the account if miles have been sold from it.

Now, the wording of the letter can be better. Instead of outright saying the member is selling miles, they should just say there's suspicious activity, and that the member needs to contact CO to resolve the situation and reactivate the account after figuring out what happened to it.

The issue is craiglist is so accessible and untrustworthy I can believe griefing/scamming someone who may have happen to leave a BP around with their OP number on it.

Irrespective of the OP's situation, this makes me wonder how CO could identify someone selling miles (I assume as tickets) via Craigslist. Assuming the seller isn't stupid enough to provide ID in the ad; I imagine that the transaction would be caught at the airport via an admission on the purchaser's part. Either that, or CO "goes undercover" and tries to buy the miles.
