CDG-LHR-LAX Pricing Anomaly

I want to fly to Europe open-jaw with a return from Paris. On ITA software for July 4, 2009 the CDG-LHR-LAX return prices out at $837 CDG-LAX with AF1080 and BD4455 (UA935). With the same flights when I select the United flight number, it prices at €479 for CDG-LHR and $510.50 LAX-LAX, approximately $600 more (prices exclude taxes and fees). Is there anyway to get the lower fare without the codeshare or am I plain out of luck?

That's the way it often is with codeshares. In this case, BD is willing to sell that flight in a lower bucket than UA.

Be careful about excluding taxes and fees in the comparison. Get the full price -- taxes and fees can vary significantly.

Additionally except for the ability to upgrade there is few reasons not to consider a codeshare -- do you have a concern?

You're right, the taxes and fees did vary significantly, but the overall difference was still very significant.

I'd like to use a SWU so I want to stick with the UA flight number.

It's possible the UA code within Europe is pushing the whole thing up.

Try pricing a UA RT to/from LHR (or other gateway) only and see if you like what you get.

If so, price a one-way CDG-LHR (or other gateway) and see what you get (on a proper carrier: BA/AF/etc.) -- should be about $100.

If this is satisfactory, call UA and have them build that with the UA flights to/from LHR, and the AF/BA/whatever flight you pick.

Can't you apply a SWU regardless of the ticketed carrier so long as the flight is operated by UA?

Yes, but you can't until day-of-flight. At least, that is my understanding.

To be exact, you can get an advance upgrade with an SWU if the flight is a UA flight number and the metal is UA metal, regardless of who issued the ticket. (So if you are on LH ticket stock, but have an UA flight number on UA metal, you are kosher).
