Election 2008: Official Canada Federal Election Thread
A Canadian federal election has been called for Canada this am.
Where are the AC forum constituents going to go to debate the respective merits of the parties involved?
Not Omni I hope.....
Will I be allowed to post an OT thread on this forum ?
A ruling please.

There's a BQ (Bloc Quebecois) banner ad streaming at the top and bottom of my screen when I've accessed the Air Canada forum tonight - does that count as election content on the AC forum if it's just above and below the AC forum? Can it be moved to just the Canada forum?

Let's get relevant
Duh - this thread is now a sticky up top of the Canada travel forum? Okay. I haven't heard anything from the candidates on:
excessive federal security fees
excessive airport landing fees
lack of protection for passengers of suddenly bankrupt airlines
excessive fuel costs for airlines
nasty charges by airlines
unilateral devaluation of frequent flyer points
monopolistic practices of AC
When a candidate does something let us know. I managed to ask Paul Martin why fees for security were so high. His response was that they were and that's a shame and maybe he would do something.
And why do we tax air conditioning in cars specially. Does Air Canada have to pay an extra $100 when it buys a 777 if it is air conditioned?
I prefer this forum to Aeroplan because we can help others who want to know about travelling here. And I am only interested in helping others. Just like all the candidates.

Another issue - passport expiry dates. I know that in the 2008 budget it was announced that come 2011, 10 year expiry on passports.
New electronic passports for Canadians, to be introduced in 2011, which will be valid for 10 years.
I would be interested to know if any parties / candidates have a differing view or would reverse this promise.

I'm sure there are a lot of FTers who have the same problem as I do.

I'm not sure if this thread is alive (or debate moved to OMNI) but is the PM Harper plagiarism (of Aussie PM John Howard's speech, 2003-ish) story a big one or old news?

PS: Interesting to see this advertisement for CF popping up on FT's front page under what's new.

Ugh - get ready for more fear and fundamentalist extremist preaching now that Harper has more seats.
It scares me the loss of rights that we will see now. That's my only concern. The Cons have a perverse belief system; it's more akin to that of Saudi Arabia than of a democracy.
Get ready for a hardline crackdown. Women, minorities, the educated and education, health care and other basic human needs are all a huge threat and must go. Only corporate no-bid contratcs and war have priority. Note that I'm speaking as a white male here...

So there are others of you watching this stupid election ?
Looks like the CPC just got a bigger minority, whoop-te-do. I bet they're sorry now they decided to annoy the 'artists' (who after all seemed like such an easy target), it's lost them all those additional seats they were hoping to get in Quebec.
Mind you c'est pas vraiment couper le souffle dans ma circonscription moi, j'habite plein centre de Duceppeville. NDP and Liberals far behind, everyone else nowhere. Don't know why I bother to vote really...

I enjoyed voting yesterday for the first time in years. Near impossible for a Canadian living overseas to vote there days, so I flew home to do so.
I like the Canadian approach of using good ol' paper ballots and a pencil.
