Aeroplan announces 4 major changes to Redemptions
Yes, I know, I like to be dramatic. But its actually good news. Just got my hands on this info yesterday :
First off :
Before :
You weren't allowed a stopover on *A domestic and transborder USA.
As of december 8 :
1 stopover permitted on top of point of turn around for any travel on PURE US Airways flights or Mixed AC and US. (Forget about United)
For example, this will be valid :
YUL-PHL(STOP)-YYZ(STOP)-YUL
Secondly :
Before : Only one stopover permitted in addition of point of turn around on AC international intinerary. (Except Asia/Australia/Tlv)
As of December 8th :
2 stopovers permitted in addition to the point of turnaround for all Air Canada international destinations (Including Hawaii)
Example : YVR-YYZ(STOP)-LHR(STOP)-YUL(STOP)-YVR
Third change (one of the best) :
Star Partner International Stopover
Before : 1 stopover permitted in addition to point of turnaround for Inter continental travel only
As of december 8 :
2 stopovers permitted in addition to point or turnaround for Inter continental travel only
Example : YYZ-FRA(STOP)-FCO(STOP)-VIE(STOP)-YYZ
And last but not least :
As of december 8 it will now be possible to cross the Atlantic on the outbound and pacific on in the inbound (or vice versa).
For example this routing would work :
YUL-YVR-HKG(STOP)-FRA-YUL
And you could choose to stop in FRA as well as part of your 2 stopovers if you would like.
These new rules apply only to bookings made as of december 8 or later.

It is based on point of origin/point of turnaround so will vary greatly depending on itinerary. Im sure theres a tool somewhere on the net to get an idea of it, maybe some other flyertalkers can direct you there, only thing I can suggest is call AE and ask them about the routing you have in mind.

To clarify, a Pacific - Atlantic award will be redeemable for an award for the Aeroplan miles previously required for an Asia only (Pacific crossing in both directions) reward. Or to put it another way, we can use the number of Aeroplan miles for an Asia award, for a true RTW travel?

to fly to/from Asia over the Atlantic, but one could not do so.
And if you want to book a revenue flight to BKK for example, most of
the routings that AC offers are via LHR or FRA, connecting to TG.
It is nice that one could do this at least one way now.
