Exclamation CNN Reporting: AF447 GIG-->CDG "Off Radar"....

Good Morning Folks,

Potentially bad news just reported on CNN. AF447 GIG-->CDG "Off Radar" and not responding to ATC. It is an Airbus A330 with 228 souls on Board.

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/am...zil/index.html

Let's all hope this is not what it sounds like.

Oh, God.

I wonder how long it was before they realised the flight was missing.

I'm not familiar with that route - does the flight crew not stay in constant contact with an ATC centre somewhere on earth? Or are there portions of the flight where they're flying without anyone knowing about it?

Flight left at 7 PM last evening so flight must have been way out over the Atlantic when it went off radar....

Here's what the BBC are saying:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8076848.stm

French plane lost over Atlantic

An Air France plane carrying at least 228 people from Brazil has disappeared from radar screens over the Atlantic.

Paris Charles de Gaulle airport said contact was lost with the flight from Rio de Janeiro at 0600 GMT. Brazil's air force confirmed the disappearance.

An airport official told AFP the Airbus 330 had been expected to arrive in Paris at 1110 local time (0910 GMT).

Another official said it was possible that the plane had a transponder problem but this was very rare.

"We are very worried," he said, quoted by AFP news agency. "The plane disappeared from the screens several hours ago."

Flight AF 447 left Rio at 1900 local time (2200 GMT) on Sunday. It had 216 passengers and 12 crew on board.

Airport authorities have set up a crisis centre at Charles de Gaulle.

Now according to the Beeb, a search-and-rescue mission has been launched near the island of Fernando de Noronha:

Brazil's air force confirmed the plane was missing and said a search and rescue mission was under way near the island of Fernando de Noronha.

This doesn't sound like a good outcome is possible. Hopeful, but it doesn't sound good at all.

Which seems strange given that contact was lost with the flight three hours before it was due to arrive in CDG. One would think that if it was this far into a ~5500nm trip, that the S&R would be closer to the North African coast.

Judging by the location of the S&R mission, it seems that contact was lost way earlier than CNN is reporting...

The tiny island of Fernando de Noronha is about 5 miles in length and 250 miles off the continental coast of Brazil. Yikes, this plane could be under thousands of feet of ocean by now.

The French media is reporting 216 passengers, 15 crew (or 12, depending on the source), "no hope".

Now according to the NYT/AP,

A Brazilian Air Force spokesman, quoted by The Associated Press, said that the plane disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean and a search was under way near the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha. The plane disappeared about 186 miles northeast of the coastal Brazilian city of Natal and near Fernando de Noronha, the spokesman said.
