I'm writing this from flight #434 and have a general question for everyone...
I was up front at the gate for a quick boarding with only about 4-5 people in front of me. When I got to 2D the couple in front of me were putting there roll-a-boards in the bin over seats 2 D -F even though the over head space above their seats (3D/F) was wide open. To top it off they were putting Their smaller style bags in sideways taking up all of the bin. Of course, I had to say something...I said why don't you use the space over your own seat instead of the seat of the seats in front of them?!?!
The space over 3D/F was empty -- no one had gotten in front of them and claimed the space yet.
Luckily for me, I was able to use the space across the aisle from my seat (empty row across from me) or else I would have had to go backwards
to retrieve my bag.
This couple copped a DYKWIA attitude about not "owning" overhead space and getting in their bags at the first opportunity because they are FF's.

I think it's common sense and courteous to your fellow passengers to not grab space when the overhead above your own seat is empty.

Opinions, thoughts??

 

When I first began reading this I thought you were going to complain about row 1 taking your overhead space - but we know row 1 need to be cut some slack with no underseat stowage and limited (if any) overhead directly above the first row.

But since row 3 occupants used space over row 2, you should have placed your carry-on over their 3D/F seats. Then get up repeatedly and stand next to 3D for extended periods of time fumbling with your bag in the bin. Add some unintentional grunting and pelvic thrusting action, as innocently as possible.

In the grand scheme of things, no big deal - you didn't have to go out of your way to find space and even if you had put your bag over their seat, it's not like you would have had to traipse back to row 10 or 20 or worse. But occasionally I would have to fight others' ignorance with fire and equal immaturity and be just as big of a pain in the rear as others. It doesn't really help anyone or solve any problems but sometimes it just makes me feel better.

 

I don't think this is a big deal, since it was in the same cabin and just one row off.

 

Chill out, life is short.

If my worst inconvenience when flying is that I have to put my bag one row behind me I consider that a pretty good trip!

 

You could have asked them if their luggage would fit up their arse sideways, accompanied by a warm (but slightly menacing) smile, of course!

 

ROTFMAO I can just so picture this! LOL

 

Of course, it's not a big deal because I was able to stow my bags across the aisle. I was just looking for the etiquette for this situation.
It would have been really difficult if I was not able to board quickly.
No worries though, it was a good flight

 

A couple of years ago, I was in a pretty empty CO BF cabin seated in center (single) seat in row 3. I had my bags stored above me and fell asleep before takeoff. A bit later I was awakened by someone at my elbow, removing my bags and moving them to the back of the F cabin. I asked what they were doing, and they said they were in row 5 (window & aisle), and wanted "to keep an eye on their belongings"!!! Needless to say, I did not agree to this request, to which they became very indignant, and proceed to tell me of the valuable items in their bag. I held my ground and had them restore my bags. (PS- no FA's were around during this time to intercede.)
