6 hours layover at JFK - Shopping Malls nearby?
In January 2006 I will have around 6 hours layover at JFK. Are there any good shopping malls nearby that you can reach by taxi?

There's the Kings Plaza mall in Brooklyn on Flatbush Ave. It's just off the
Belt Parkway, no more than 10-15 minutes from JFK. Probably between $20 and $25 taxi one way. There is no public transportation to this location from Kennedy.
You can also cab it to Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City Long Island. It's bigger and better. Only downside will be the cost of the taxi since you're leaving NYC proper. Maybe the next poster can chime in cost wise.

Do you think Green Acres in Valley stream might be closer?
(Roosevelt Field has a more upscale selection of stores, however.)

In 1990 they had a major renovation and invested in a new front door mat in the entrance way
Even the Mayor showed up
I grew up in Valley Stream 18 years of my life
Was a regular fixture there as a youth.....
Not what I call the good old days......

its a problem even getting a cab to go back to the airport from a suburban (RF) mall
you could call a local cab company and hope- but who knows if they will even show up or if you will find them
forget about GA- it is "downscale"
but- for only $25 to $50 an hour you can hire a "black car" to pick you up, drive around, wait for you, and bring you back to JFK - no hassles and a safe place to leave your purchases while you shop
you can make RF in 30 minutes in no traffic
but it could be 90 if traffic is bad- or if it rains- or snows-or construction
i live 45 minutes from JFK (at 4am on a sunday morning) but it has taken me 3 hours, too!!
you could probably take the airtrain to jamaica to LIRR to penn station, manhattan in less than an hour
and macy's- the worlds largest store- is right across the street!!!

Probably 2 to 3 hours to enjoy. Just leave extra time for the return
Be sure to get the train schedules in advance and just keep an eye on time

good question-
is the six hours arrival time to departure?
given that you may want to try to clear security at least an hour before flight time (depends on terminal and time of day)- and the security line can be an hour long-that eats up part of the time
and- if you are a foreigner, and need to clear customs and immigration on arrival- could be 20 minutes, could be 2 hours
(did i tell you about the 2-hour waits to unload bags from AA all last winter??)
but taking a cab to a local mall just doesn't seem a good idea, either- like sitting on the Belt for 45 minutes trying to get to JFK from KP??
any other ideas?????
or is the six hours free-and-clear time allowing for arrival and departure??

Whatever you choose, don't exit the Airtrain in Jamaica and plan on wandering around the area taking in the sights. That area may look fine to everyone who lives in NYC but it felt hostile as heck to me the one time I stopped off with my bags to get a slice of pizza -- and that was in the daytime. I don't even want to think what it would seem like at night.
