Fares to HKG...Wow, expensive

I flew discounted business calls YUL-HKG back in August, booked 25 days prior to departure for about $3700 return all in.

I need to go back in January, the best fare I can find is about $8k...crazy expensive. And Latitude is $5800 (I could use an upgrade cert)...

Any chance the low fare will come back between now and January - I am better off booking the lat fare and waiting to see if the Z fare comes down in price?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Same fare for CX. CAD 8,677.47 all-in, all in C class.

THOUGH IN Y......
For much of January, the fare for YUL-HKG rt all-in is CAD1,812.47. Better service, especially AVOD/IFE with CX (same IFE throughout all 3 classes). Fare classes are Q (AC flights) and K,M. Upgrade booking classes for CAD85.

I know. Overlooked that...., the CX booking system defaults booking as Economy. Sorry about that.

The AC NYC-HKG route takes off at 6 something AM in the morning. Unless you're prepared to spend a night in a hotel + the cost of YYZ-EWR, it's not exactly a very easy route.

If you want to stay home, one possible but not very practical option is to get a one way YUL to EWR the evening before, take the EWR-YUL-YYZ-HKG same evening. Save you one night in EWR but pay $200 for the YUL-EWR ticket.

There is a B fare YUL-HKG for about CAD2600. After Oct 29, you can upgrade it with SWU.

You guys are right EWR-HKG is $3170 All In Executive class...thats about 1/3 of the fare from YUL to HKG...

There must be a crime here somewhere....Ridiculous, makes me rethink my loyalty to AC

Check whether you are flying around Chinese New Year. If so, it is one ,if not the, peak travel time for that part of the world.

OK, I have to book YOW-DEL. Client won't pay Exec class. Client will pay Virgin Premium Economy (which flies from Newark, through LHR.) We don't need the miles for status so this is an option, or kicking in the additional $2K to do AC/Jet is another option. I'll do that for my employee even if the client won't.

But before I pay the extra $2K, I'd like to know what tool was used to find the EWR-HKG fare that is referenced here? If I can find a similar deal to India on Star Alliance, that would be wonderful since the interim airports would offer lounge access, which he won't get if he flies Virgin.

I recently signed up for the ANA tool (to see if any exec class reward tickets were available and they aren't). Obviously, I need another tool to find these 'cheap starting city" deals.

The Z fare is actually listed on www.aircanada.ca.

I used a random dates of EWR-YYZ-HKG on Jan. 13, 2010 and HKG-YYZ-EWR on Jan. 20, 2010. The total fare including taxes comes to C$3,207.32.

For those living in Ontario and east, it's "silly" not to fly through EWR. Even with the extra pair of YYZ-EWR-YYZ ticket and overnight costs, it's still significantly cheaper (plus more Status Miles) than buying the Latitude fare from YYZ to HKG using SWU or the Z fare ex-YYZ to HKG.

LH is doing B fare to I class upgrades (I is Business class on LH) Katheryn EX-US. So if you are already considering going out of EWR anyways look at LH. Jet Airways out of YYZ via a good TA might also work.

The EX-NYC fare to HKG was first discussed HERE. Clipper801 was just as shocked as you were Dmanmtl

For HKG... if you are willing to turn you business trip into a minor holiday there are fares around $4500.00 plus a side trip one way fare for another few hundred. Makes the whole trip more of an adventure too... and then there is that small nation state just a short flight from Hong Kong that gives you a base fare of $4100.00 plus taxes.

Don't be a sucker to ac.com people.... it really isn't in your best interest
