Baggage allowance on multi-cabin/multi-partner award?

Flying DFW-IAD-BRU-NCE on UA Y/SN C/SN C... I have no status whatsoever on any on these carriers; If I check in bags, will I have to pay since the first leg is on UA Y?

Thanks!

I'd like to know the answer to this question too as I'm in a similar situation.

It should be as per the IATA's MSC (most significant carrier) rule: the baggage allowance is the one you would receive from the first carrier crossing a tarriff area. So the operator of your IAD-BRU leg would be the one who decides baggage allowance, if I'm correct.

Having said that, you may have to remind UA of that.

CX has a good reference here

I'm wondering why the question is in the Air Canada forum. AE award?

Try punching your PNR in here:

If you like the answer you get, print it out and bring it to the airport...

I've been told by the Aeroplan call center that the allowance is based on the first international flight.

The AE booking confirmation won't work. He'll have to call AE and obtain UA's booking confirmation.

In this case I have a problem. Our first flight is YXU-ORD, which would give us 1/0 pieces of free luggage. ORD-WAW, which is our second flight, would give us 3/3...these Y portions of J bookings are really annoying.

MSC is the operator of ORD-WAW; you get 3 if on the same ticket.

I'd call each individual airline to confirm the allowance. In my experience, the individual operators allowance is not the deciding factor. The entire booking has a single allowance on aeroplan awards. Ive had 3 free bags on a final domestic segment in economy, even after a long stopover.

Taking a flyer here, but I seem to remember the US managing to get an exception to the IATA regs so the first marketing carrier's rules could apply to the journey, regardless of MSC. The application of this rule is at the discretion of the airline checking you in, provided that airline is a US DOT carrier.

I have no first-hand experience as I rarely check bags and when I have I've always been *G.

Ancillary fees in the USA are big, big business. I'll give you three guesses as to how United interprets the rule.

If the first marketing carrier is not specified on ATPCO’s published list of US DOT Carriers, then the rules of the very next marketing carrier on the journey that is specified on ATPCO’s list of US DOT Carriers apply.

Once the first marketing carrier is identified (through steps 1 and 2 above), it is the first marketing carrier’s policy to opt for the rules of the Most Significant marketing Carrier (MSC) for the journey or retain the first marketing carrier’s own baggage policy.
Again, I don't profess to be an expert in this arena!
