Never rains but it pours ... PIA had a similar incident at Manchester the day before, too:

They've had 4 or 5 of these incidents at Manchester alone. Apparently PIA have been applying the wrong kind of grease to the undercarriage (the 777 fleet was only recently delivered). The result is that the grease keeps catching fire because it cannot handle the temperature generated by the brakes on landing. They have been warned to correct the problem but it looks like they are taking their time...

Definitely YGWYPF then.
Surprised nobody has died yet from this. But in the meantime, let's continue flying them shall we?

AC used to have the ground handling contract for PK in YYZ... some of the stories the rampies could tell you would curl your hair.

It was not a very serious incident. Supposedly the grease used on the moving parts of the landing gear was flammable and the heat caused it to ignite. The PK mechanics had been using the wrong grease (flammable type).

YGWYPF? But do passengers really have a choice? Anybody know of a different airline that serves Karachi and Lahore, Pakistan to YYZ? Emirates has flights from there but doesn't go to YYZ. If you really need to get from KARACHI to YYZ and PIA is the only airline it seems like you have to risk it or your SOL.

But surely you can route via the Pacific Ocean on someone other than PK?

Yes but PIA offers nonstop from Pakistan instead of having the hassle of connecting into Europe, United Arab Emirates, ect.

... AND...?!
It's still YGWYPF, regardless of choices or not. They paid, they got it.

They have not had any major crashes or problems. If your going to Pakistan, than you are probably experienced with PIA and know/feel it is safe. Although the maintanance are at fault this was not a serious incident and it was taken care of quickly. I assume pax on those flights do not care about mileage and therfore would rather fly the more direct instead of the YYZ-LHR-DXB-Karachi-DXB-LHR-YYZ that you people may choose. Another good option may be YYZ-JFK-DXB-Karachi-DXB-JFK-YYZ.

Actually,

I have flown into Lahore and Karachi a number of times in the past little while.
I would say the people fly PIA out of a national expectation. I agree with Josh that they generally don't care about miles, but I would also say they would mostly acknowledge BA or Emirates as a better (or higher class, safer Carrier if you will) BUT still fly PIA because its expected.
