Upgrades & Class of Service Bonus

I was upgraded to J-Class on my YYC to YYZ flight, however I was only awarded 100% status miles with no 50% class of service bonus. Is this the case for upgraded tickets, or has AP made an error?

I am not sure if it make's a difference, but, were you on an eligible fare using an upgrade cert, or were op-upped?

Hi Taupo: I was on an eligible (Latitude) fare and used one of my upgrade certs. The ticket I was issued was a J-Class, so I would have thought that the full 150% status miles would apply.

Did you upgrade ahead of time over the phone, or did you upgrade when checking in?
Did your BP have ML*1 on it? If it did you got screwed even though you used a cert. In addition, using a cert means you should be getting 25% CoS, not the actual J CoS. In addition, your BP will always show "J" just to indicate you're in the front. All cattle class BP's will show "Y" even if you paid an "R" fare. If you were already confirmed in "C" then you should be definitely getting your 25% CoS. If you were never confirmed in "C" prior to checking in, then we need a little more info...

Hi!

Upgrades are looked at as "C" class, so you should have received a 25% bonus. Were you confirmed in business prior to arriving at the airport or was the upgrade processed at the gate? I have a 0% success rate this year at having the bonus show up if processed at the gate. You will need to contact AC to get the bonus.

Cheers,

Same with me ... I've had this happen a couple of times recently. Got my upgrade at the gate and had to contact AC to get the 25% bonus.

which, depending on the agent you get at Aeroplan, they may or may not give to you. I've had agents get veeeeerrrry upset at me for insisting that domestic flights upgraded on coupons at the gate are also eligible for the 25% COS bonus. Like it's my fault that your darned system doesn't credit properly.

Sure enough, I called AP and was advised that I was entitled to the 25% class of service bonus and that my account would be updated accordingly.

I know some posters here don't like sending stuff in by mail, but when I last had a bit of push-back on a 25% bonus, I stuffed the BP, e-ticket, and a note in an envelope and sent it off. It posted 10 days later.

I think it takes less time to put it all in an envelope than it does to call, go through the automated response system, and then get into a discussion.

Crazy thought: AP should have as one of their phone menu options "Push 5 if you'd like to have an argument." (With apologies to Monty Python.)

I pulled this nifty chart off of the Aeroplan site; it gives a pretty good presentation of how base Q miles and COS bonus Q miles are supposed to be calculated according to the various fare buckets :

Question No COS and 50% miles

I had a similar experience this weekend. I flew YOW-YVR, YVR-ICN, and back the same route. I was upgraded over the phone on the international segments, but only at the gate on the domestic segments. I used an upgrade certificate on both instances. My account on aeroplan.com shows 50% of mileage credited on my YOW-YVR and YVR-YOW segments.

I called them just a few minutes ago, and was told that, even though I used an upgrade certificate, I don't get full miles or CoS bonus on domestic segments when they are a part of an international trip. - What???, I asked. - I did get them last year! She replied saying that these are new rules for 2005...

She did say that on domestic or transborder flights only (no international flight involved) I would indeed get 100% miles and 25% CoS bonus.

Can anyone here in the board confirm that this is indeed the case? If true, I'm very disappointed that these rule changes are not communicated upfront... I probably would have looked at an alternative routing to maximize the mileage, or purchased my dosmetic ticket separately...

It's not the case (that is, if you are going from a domestic flight number and connecting to an int'l flight with a different flight number). You should be getting COS domestic. I flew YYC-LHR via YYZ and got the COS YYC YYZ and YYZ YYC. I used a SSWU each way.

Thanks for the reply, yyznomad.

Yes, I was flying on different flight numbers. Here is the itinerary, which was booked on an H fare:
YOW-YVR on AC 139 - upgraded at the gate with SWU - got 50% miles no COS
YVR-ICN on AC 63 - upgraded over the phone - got 100% miles
ICN-YVR on AC 64 - upgraded over the phone - got 100% miles
YVR-YOW on AC 138 - upgraded at the gate with SWU - got 50% miles no COS

What should I do now? Call again and try a different agent?

You bet. I'm not sure about others, but I call over and over again (over a few days) until I get my issue resolved (depending on how badly I want something done correctly).

I u/g'd at the gate twice this year (once LAX YYZ and recently YVR YYZ) with a SSWU and only got the status miles for my original booking as the BP's had "ML*1" on them and it wasn't a true pre-confirmation in "C". Given that I'm already very close to SE2006, it's not a huge deal for me, but I think I will muster the energy to go through the process anyway. Let us know how it goes!
