No one appears to have interrelated this excellent holiday gesture with the announcement that all AS Mileage Plan international partner flights (including BA, CX, QF, KE and others) will earn EQM starting 1/15/2014. As has been the reaction in the FT thread on that subject, there is some potential for inflation in the number of MVPGs and 75Ks as a result, making complimentary upgrades more difficult to achieve because of the increased demand from more elites. Additional guest upgrades provide some insurance against that possibility, even if only for 2014.
Good idea, let's make upgrades even more difficult by giving those who aren't going to re-qualify for gold upgrades! That's if AS actually releases some decent U space.

Good use of BI, AS!

Edit: I'm sour because someone jumped me on the upgrade list for my flight this evening. Which one of you 75Ks booked a trip to SEA from SMF more than a month out?

I'm delighted AS is doing something for elites, but I'm torn by this gift.

1) The upgrades have the highest 'potential' value: if I could find a use for them, they are very valuable. My problem is I can't even use the upgrades I do get. So I don't think I can take the upgrades.

2) The BR passes have the next highest value - $45 each if purchased by a non-member. But I already have Priority Pass which gets me in, plus I am getting 4 passes for hitting 75K. So I should probably pass on these too.

3) The GoGo passes are actually the most valuable to me. A 24-hour pass is $14, so they're the least 'value' of all the gifts, but since I normally don't like to pay for in-flight wifi, I think this will be my choice. Especially if the codes have a long expiry.

I'm grateful that AS has extended this gift as a surprise & delight offering this year. I sincerely hope that no one takes this as a sign that a Christmas gift is a published or expected benefit for Golds because the LAST thing I want is a bunch of whining next year when AS does something slightly different or nothing at all. Let's all remember that after the cookies stopped, AS went to physical greeting cards and then emailed e-cards. So no complaining!

Um, us lowly MVP's are considered "elites", too.

I fully appreciate that you guys fly a lot more than us, but I wish I didn't know what you guys got (darn this board!).

The wife and I are both Golds and we both chose Boardroom passes to give to our daughter when she is traveling without us.

Glenn

p.s. I still miss the cookies, but this is a pretty good gift.

+1 about the fare restrictions on upgrades...as I transition from UA to AS, I've booked about 12 segments (for 2014) in the past few weeks and after glancing at all the fare codes, they are all either in G or T class so none of them are eligible for the upgrade certs...gotta believe there will be a lot of unused upgrades this year...

Nah, sitting on 27,000 miles, which are almost all BIS, plus we are retired and ALL is leisure travel out of our own pocket.

But...I'm MVP, and my husband is MVP, also with 27,000 miles, so together we're (um, um carry the 2...) 54,000 miles...maybe we can get ONE Boardroom pass??

Really, in all seriousness...what if they said to you "real elites"...we're going to take these upgrades, and wifi, and boardroom passes...and GIVE THEM TO A CHARITY IN YOUR NAME!

I'm just looking for a little acknowledgement that as "elites", too, we got bupkus.

The USO would be happy to take the gift off your hands to help you avoid further distress

What form do the BR passes arrive in? I have a family member traveling (not with me) in a few days and I might end up choosing the passes in order to facilitate access to the SEA BR. That obviously won't work if it's a physical thing that gets mailed.

it's a code. Just make sure your family member has the code to present at the Board Room

Does this mean if a current MVP hits MVPG by the end of the year, they will be eligible for the elite gift, too?

The flight that puts me over MVPG is on Dec. 28, and might not post until after the new years.

Either way its a nice gesture by AS, but i'll still be super jealous if i dont end up getting the gift.
