We did both. Took the 26 Glacier cruise out of Whittier on Fri, and the Kenai Fjords cruise out of Seward on Wed. 2 very different perspectives, indeed.

Interesting. Looking forward to your report and comparison of the two!

Yes, I've had a similar experience when I've been out hiking and come across masses of tourists. I was minding my own business in downtown Anchorage, dressed in my usual hiking gear, when an elderly couple tried to give me a cash!

Money!

I realize that I'd looked like a really Old Penny, a little worn around the edges, but did I look needy?

I guess I looked like a slept on 4th!

I try to avoid Alaska during tourist season for about a 1000 good reasons, but not the least of which is having to share Alaska with the mobs.

For those of you who, like me, were trying to picture what this tunnel set-up looks like, I found this nifty photo:

Here's the official webpage, which has all sorts of info:

And here's a short video that captures part of the experience of driving through:

Thanks. I don't like the idea of driving that tunnel. Not in the least. Great photo!

"Tougher in Alaska" did a short segment on the tunnel during their episode about the Alaskan RR. There was a short clip of Geo driving thru the tunnel on his way to the Whittier docks (where they loaded rr cars onto a barge bound for Seattle).

I "enjoyed" it more when one had to put the vehicle on the train. It sure was eery sitting in the pitch black in the car while going through the tunnels! It was certainly more novel, but now travel is more reliable, I suppose, even with the occasional tunnel closures.
