Differant Miles for round trip

Recently flew SFO-CLT-ROA. The flights between the same cities had different miles awarded. SFO-CLT 5085 miles, CLT - SFO 4340 miles. CLT - ROA 544 miles, ROA - CLT 456 miles. Assuming the cities are the same distance between cities why different amount of miles awarded. These are base miles. This was a paid for ticket.

Miles are awarded based on fare paid, not distance. I'm guessing your outbound was a higher priced fare component than the return based on the numbers you posted. How much was your ticket without taxes?

$2007, paid first class. The flights are different fare classes, D, M, R and R. The flight from CLT - ROA has no first class the flight from ROA - CLT did. This makes sense. I never really looked at how miles are awarded. Thanks for the response.

The math roughly checks out with it being 5 miles per dollar spent. D and R are Business fares, while M is economy. The difference is based on the cost of the overall ROA/SFO itinerary (based on fare bucket) and then split over the individual segments using some calculation.
