4 hr 30 min "mechanical" departure delay AA #112 6/20

(2) prem econ award seats;
forgot to note BCN arrival time delay, it could have been under 4 hrs 30 min;
inconvenience = less time in Barcelona;
flight attendant stated "mechanical delay in Philadelphia PA;
have not yet taken any action, don't know if compensation is "legit" inquiry;
authoritative advice appreciated; is there deadline if legit to pursue?
__________ __
I've heard rumblings that US govt raised penalties & defined specifics...
thanks in advance

On a US carrier departing the US to Europe, the options are limited since EU261 doesn't apply. If you complain to AA, they will likely throw you some miles. I wouldn't expect much more than that.

The new rules go into effect June 25th, but still do not have mandatory compensation for delayed or canceled flights. They only make it easier to get a refund for a flight should you choose not take a flight due to delays, cancelations, and schedule changes and defines what constitutes a "significant change" that allows you to cancel a flight and get a refund (3 hours domestically and 6 hours for international). As noted above, the airlines may throw you some miles or a travel voucher, but there are no mandated compensation amounts.

thanks for advice;
what dept. of AA best to make miles-voucher request?
Aadvantage Desk or other?
thanks in advance;
rebooking was not financially prudent;
would've caused loss of (2) nonrefundable hotel nights = ~$500US Sapphire points;

It's even wowier than that. Actual delay in arrival was only 3:23 per the FLIFO posted upthread.

Why would you rebook for an international flight that is only 4:30 late? Most routes are only once a day… why rebook?

well it’s a matter of law if it was the return originating in BCN. So not so wow.

No, not 4:30 late. Look at the FLIFO. We are talking about a flight that was less than 3 hr 30 minutes late.

I understand. But before the flight took off, when it was possible to rebook, OP was looking at ~4:30 delay. Again, on a once a day route, why rebook w/ a 4:30 (or 3:30) delay?

Legally nothing. You can try to get some good will from customer relations.

I understand, but why is it "wow" when if it was an EU airline or the reverse route, it's standard.

Shaming the OP for something totally reasonable and standard in similar situations.

Not only that, but if the OP had been on an EU airline for MIA-BCN, he would have been entitled to EUR300 compensation for a 3.5 hour delay. Some might argue 'wow - how do US airlines get away with it" rather than being demeaning to someone thinking that there might well be compensation due. Definitely a good time to be booked on an EU carrier rather than AA for decent protections on US-EU
