this is what they set my spending limit to ... without asking. Do I need such a limit I'd rather have a 20k limit.

Mine Also

Have like 8 cards I think with AMEX but I moved up one of mine to $30,000.00 it was at $24,000.00 something. Didn't really need it but figured what the heck I would try it.

I upped my brand new unused blue card a few months ago with a $3800 limit to $30,000 instantly. no financial review or anything.

wait a couple of months, this can backfire. Are you good for a 30k credit? Ready for sending all you tax documents in and have your card suspended until they have completed the review. Increasing your credit line by an order of magnitude is not a good idea IMO.

I get the dreaded financial review every year on my Plat Amex, since I regularly put six figure charges on it. They don't suspend any charging activity, they tell me I have X amount of time to send them documents... I fax them in.. they leave me alone. I know lots of folks won't do it, but I don't sweat it.

Presumably 'cause they already give me the financial twice-over I've had no problem getting high limits on other products. I've never asked for an increase on my SPG Amex and that limit is orders of magnitude more than the 24,900 others are trying not to top.

My Hilton Plat Amex limit has been bumped ~$17k automatically in less than a year (started at $18k, now up to $34.9) but I'm about to host a small conference and wanted to put all the charges on the card, which will total somewhere in the order of $60-$70k. Any reason not to simply request a net-$75k limit adjustment via this tool?

FWIW I'm a previous Plat Charge card holder but tossed it and started using the Hilton card exclusively.

I did this for my SPG card & HH card (all my other cards were close to or over $25k, so not really worth trying). SPG cleared instantly. It "deferred" my decision for the HH card but cleared the next day. Guess it's not automatic all the time.

You can be expecting a financial review and a request for proof of income and full financials along with bank statements. Personal above 24,999.00 will trigger this and business above 49.999.00 will do the same. Unless you got there gradually and with spending a payments over many many months to substantiate it. YMMV>

give them a call ahead of time and tell them the details. They will be thrilled to have 75k on their cards if they know what is going on. If you simply try to charge that much there will be a lot of issues. First of all I don't think they will let you charge that much in the first place, since they have security measures in place. Spending 2-5k every month and suddenly there is a 60k spending will ring some alarm bells (and it should). The last thing you want to happen is a 'card not working' in such a situation. When I still lived in Switzerland I usually spent 2k on my Plat card, once needed to spend 10k, gave them a call, and there was no issue at all.

Am I to understand that there is a limit for platinum charge cards???

I'm 20 years old and a small business owner in Calgary, Alberta in Canada. I applied for the platinum card 3 months ago as somewhat of a test to see if I would get approved as I have immaculate credit... And suprise I got the card curriered to my residence a month later via Canada Post Express (Next day)...

I have been using the card solid for about two months now... Occasionally I call before I am about to make super large purchases (such as vehicle repairs, etc..) which have ranged from 1,000 to 6,000 dollars and everytime I am told that I need not call to ask because my card is indeed flagged as unlimited, and I only need to call after 3 months, and ONLY if the purchase is going to be a percentage (I can't remember the exact number) higher than my normal average spending (which does usually average out to the same)....

I just find this kind of interesting, because even on the online account manager, I see credit limits associated with my 4 other american express cards, but none is listed with my platinum card. So that is why I am just curious about these other platinum cardholders mentioning limits on their platinum charge cards...

Maybe it is because I am in Canada? Maybe it's just because of my credit... Who knows, post your thoughts...

Most Platinum charge cards do not have an explicit limit, but you have to watch your spending pattern. Everything which is outside the normal range will flag the account. A 5k charge is not an issue on a Plat card, but a 50k charge will, if you never spend that much.

Your situation is not unusual. If you spend 5k this month and pay it off and spend 7k next month and pay it off and 11k the next and do the same and 15k the next and 18k the next and 24 the next and 30 the next and 39 the next and 48 the next and so on and on, you will not have a problem. But if you charge 3k this month and around the same next month and then the next month you try to charge 10k, you will get flagged. So it is all about a spending pattern and you do have a "Credit Guideline" with amex and it automatically adjusts based on your spending patterns. If you are going to do something unusual, just call up and explain it in advance and you probably will not have a problem. YMMV.

Thanks guys... That clears up a few things...

I know the platinum isn't anything like centurian, but I'm definatly pleased with the "status" the card entitles to a young individual like myself... A few people have argued saying its a supplimentary card on "daddies" account, which doesn't bother me (because they will never do the things I am)... But for the people who know it's actually my card, ive had numerous people ask me what I do for a living, and start up conversation which I have had to literally fight to get out of... This happens anywhere from buying equiptment for the office, to filling up with gas, its kinda neat

I have an urge to do some serious travelling in the next 16 months, so I'm waiting for the first time I get to try out and use the concierge service, or the travel services for bookings, I want to see what kind of experience I will have. No doubt with previous encounter on my other cards (platinum credit no limit, amex business, etc..) they have always treated me very well, which has caused me to swear by my amex cards. I love their mentality, I love the way they do business, I love their business models, and this is one of the reasons why my business chose to bring in american express to process credit card transactions when my clients requested. It's just to bad that not all merchants I purchse products or services from accept Amex... And I think in accordance with american expresses business model and marketting, this has definatly caused me to change to merchants who accept american express. I want to see the reaction of some of these businesses if they knew this was affected their business in the way it is. If I prefer to use american express no doubt other individuals like myself do the same.

One day I dream I can make the req's for the Centurion card, that would be the day, lol. I'm curious if they even have the centurion program in Canada? Does anybody know?
