Mileage transfer question (very basic, sorry)

Can an Amex cardholder transfer an unlimited # of miles into a non-family member's frequent flyer account? Are there limits imposed by the frequent flyer programs themselves? Thank you...

no limits.

you are not "allowed" to transfer into other peoples accounts

for some programs, you can just link their account online, and transfer, and it works. try searching, i believe there is a fair amount of discussion on this.

Bear in mind that it is not necessary to transfer a large amount of points into another person's frequent flyer account to obtain an award for that person. Virtually all programs allow you to redeem an award from your own account for anyone.
